problem getting input from the output on cable box

if I use the cable directly from the wall to the PVR-350, it works fine.

if I use the cable tv cable to go to the cable box, and the cable box to go out to the TV (using the "TV/VCR" output), I either get static or a black screen, depending on which mode it's on.

can anyone help?

You're describing a path that does not include the 350, aren't you?

If you want to feed the 350 from the cable box, the best choice is S-Video (also known as SVHS). If not available, then composite video (also known as RCA). If neither of these are an option, you can use an RF coax cable (the same kind of cable used to deliver the cable signal to the cable box). The first two options require you to feed the audio separately. Audio is included if you use an RF coax cable.

Once you've settled on the cabling, you need to configure SageTV to use the correct input on the card. It may be that this is what's tripping you up. SageTV counts the different inputs on the card as different sources, so rerun the setup wizard if you think you might have the the wrong source selected.

it's the same kind of cable as from the cable signal to the cable box, but it doesn't work.

this works:

cable signal -> 350

this doesn't work

cable signal -> cable box (using same type of cable as the cable signal one does) -> 350

It *should* work. The one issue is that once you put the cable box into the mix, SageTV needs to be able to control the cable box to change its channels. Have you configured an IR transmitter or serial cable to change channels on the cable box?

Did you configure your source in Sage, to tell it not to try and tune?

Go through the source Setup Wizard and tell it you're using an external tuner.

okay, played with the setup wizard.

here's where I'm at

if I set the IR channel in the setup wizard to 3, the video works fine, but my USB-UIRT won't change channels for me if I change channels within sagetv.

if I change to channel 4 for the IR, video doesn't work, but the USB-UIRT works fine

What exactly are you selecting in the Setup Wizard regarding your input & tuning options? The source setup process is covered in the manual, starting on p.112 of the v2.2 manual, which is found in your SageTV dir. Double check your selections for steps 2-7.

You might want to consider starting with a fresh properties file & reconfiguring everything. If you do this, delete sage.properties and its autobackup while SageTV is completely exited, after making copies elsewhere. Restart SageTV to reconfigure.

I've reinstalled twice now. this is really frustrating.

hauppauge 350. usb-uirt.

in setup, I tell it to use the tv tuner option. I set up the usb-uirt to control the cable box. it tells me to select a channel. I start with 3. while it's on 3, I can control the cable box just fine with the USB-UIRT, but there's no video. when it's on 4 I get video, but I can't control it with the USB-UIRT

Did you teach the cable box remote control to the USB-UIRT? So if you connect the box directly to your TV what channel does your TV need to be on to get a picture? If channel 4 gives you a picture you still need to teach your cable box remote to the USB-UIRT. Did you read and follow the steps in the manual?

when the USB-UIRT is working, I can change the channel in sagetv with the hauppauge remote. this changes the cable box channel via the USB-UIRT. however, every channel is static. no matter what channel the cable box or the tv is on. (it isn't COMPLETELY static- I see the computer screen/desktop- but the sagetv window has static in it)

if I go into the settings and change the USB-UIRT IR channel to 4 instead of 3, I can still make the channel change within sagetv, but it doesn't control the cable box. however, in this case, the video DOES work. on every channel- the problem is I need to manually go from one channel to another on my cable box.

The same people are going to see it regardless of where it is posted in the forum, but it is an issue regarding setting up your hardware.

Please see my previous post and specify what is being done for each of those setup wizard steps. You are connecting the tuner to the converter via coax, right? I don't know what you mean when you say the USB-UIRT was set to channel 4 -- where is that being set? The USB-UIRT doesn't get set to a channel; it is just a receiver/transmitter. Perhaps you mean the tuner was set to channel 3 or 4 in one of the setup steps?
