Question about recording
I just read the FAQ and have a question about recording shows. If I am away and want to record a show that's an hour long and that's it......is there a way to stop the recording after that one show is over? Unless I read the FAQ wrong, it's my understanding it will record every show on after that. Is this true?

The only way this could happen, I think, is if you had LiveTV always recording, which is not on by default.

The reason I ask is because I started recording a show before leaving for dinner earlier tonight and when I came home, it was recording another show and after that show was over it started recording another. The only way I could figure out how to stop it was to shut Sage down. Where would I check to see if it's LiveTv always recording?

It sounds like you were definitely watching liveTV. My guess is that you were watching something live, hit Record, to "tape" it. If you start watching "LiveTV" (which you would do by say picking something out of the guide, or start watching a recording before it finishes), then Sage will stay in LiveTV mode until you change it*.
Now a couple things about LiveTV files. They are the lowest priority and the first to be deleted. Now contrary to most or all other PVRs out there, Sage doesn't use a circular buffer for LiveTV, it records each show as it goes, the benefits/drawbacks of which are another thread . Just realize that Sage will delete those files when it needs room, and they will be the first to go. *I mentioned you can stop it (LiveTV), there are a couple ways, Start a new recording, Close the File, or my preferred way, is to put Sage into Sleep Mode (Ctrl+Z IIRC). I would say the ideal way, is to just put Sage to sleep when you're done viewing. All your recordings will continue. Another option is to run the Service, and then you can completely exit Sage, and the service will continue to record in the background. |

Thank you very much for your reply. Let me get this straight....if I schedule recordings...and I am not watching live tv...then after my scheduled recording is over....Sage will stop recording?

You might want to check out the SageTV Quick Start Guide, starting on p. 22 of the v2.2 manual. (The PDF manual is in your SageTV dir.) - Andy

Yup. It's just once you start watching something "Live" Sage doesn't stop until you tell it to.

Thanks guys. I re-read the manual and I think I have a handle on it now.

Ok...I guess I don't have a handle on it just yet. I was looking at the guide and selected a show to watch....did not tell it to record...and when I checked recording's...sure enough the show I was watching was recorded. Korben_Dallas said: I think, is if you had LiveTV always recording, which is not on by default. How do I verify if LiveTV is always recording and if it is, how do I turn it off?

Any time you watch a 'live' show, it is recording; there is no option to do otherwise. (There is, however, a property that tells SageTV to never stop recording, but that is something different.)
Pages 24-25 in the v2.2 manual explains live TV and what to do to make it stop recording live TV when you are done watching it. When you put SageTV to sleep, it should only record shows that are scheduled to be recorded -- did you try what I suggested doing in my last post? Page 25 of the manual mentions creating a Manual Recording. - Andy

I created manual recordings and have had no trouble doing that. I was just confused about livetv and recording. Now I have it straight...you watch tv...it gets recorded. Thanks
