Wow!!! SageTV sure growing in size

I just downloaded 2.2.8 and it is over 31 Mb. Version 2.2.7 was under 17Mb. That's close to double in size. What are we gaining?

I think 2.2.8 now includes a full Java installer. That'll for sure make up that size difference.

They included it because it simplifies the install for new users.

Yup -- I forgot to mention the larger download size in the announcement post, so I added it.

Not that it really matters for those of us using broadband, but could you guys provide two versions? One with the Java Installer, one without?

Might help anyone who is still crawling along on dialup...

I don't think Opus can say this, so I will.

I believe they had been criticized a couple of times in published reviews for requiring Java, so the best way to address those points is to include the installer and have it run if needed. I agree that downloading at 5min/mb sucks, and adding 16 odd megabytes to that adds insult to injury - but I think it was a good call.

I'd also add that writing Sage in Java was a brilliant program design move, it's what is allowing them to make a linux port now, without much (a very relative 'much') work. I'm sure that as Sage matures, Jeffrey Kardatzke will pat himself on the back daily for making that decision, even if it was unpopular.

There's really nothing stopping me from commenting on including java in the download... other than the fact that I don't really have any comments about it. I never gave it much thought, since I'm not involved with that, but I suppose including it makes sense from a tech support standpoint of making sure the user installs what is needed.

aperry: if you have suggestions, I would just send them directly to Frey.

So what was actually changed in 2.2.8? Just the fix for the library bug noted in 2.2.7?
