Sage TIME OFF

Ive used sage for quite a while and am annoyed by my motherboard's time being ahead almost by 3-4 minutes by days end. I have changed the CMOS battery and it did not fix it. I have A External Program to Sync with an atomic clock but that event only happens daily. I was wonder if syncing with the Sage Server can be configurable to every hour or so?

There is a program called symmtime that I use on a machine that can't keep time right and you can set it to sync many times a day.

for windows, can you write a batch file that windows scheduler can call every hour to run & exit atomic clock/some other app? (I know I can't!! )

This one's been around forever and still works just fine.

http://www.arachnoid.com/abouttime/

Runs as client or server so one machine can master and the rest slave.

I recommend using the ntp time server pool for the USA. It's more accurate than using many of the overloaded stratum 1 servers.

us.pool.ntp.org

for more info: http://www.pool.ntp.org/

I also like freebie Dimension4
you can set it to sync as often as you like.

i have winxp which has built-in time sync (and i think that is already automatically turned on but look for the "internet time" tab in the Date and Time Properties). i've read previous complaints about doing time sync with the sagetv server -- and so for my setup, i let winxp do the time sync and i disable the time sync in sagetv. i don't know if you can set it to do it hourly with just that if its your motherboard that is going too fast.

WinXP's built-in Internet Time only updates once per week, no other options. I use ArGoSoft Time Synchronizer. Runs only as a service, configure to update from whatever time server you want, configure to automatically update as often as you want as often as every minute. Oh, and it's free.

thanks. i guess the time's been so accurate on mine that i haven't had to worry about when it does the time sync. works for me, but it looks like i have another thing to consider tweaking! :-)

edit: or i think i may have something else on my system that does a daily time sync as an added benefit....

Thanks for the info and link. I will try that program. I Still would like to know how and when Sage Syncs with its server.

There are probably some tweak utilities to do this for you, but you can use RegEdit to go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient

Then, change SpecialPollInterval to the value in seconds (default: 604800 seconds, for 7 days) for the interval you want to use for Windows to perform its own update. Note: I haven't actually done this, because like many others here, I use a utility that includes an atomic clock sync. I'm just mentioning this registry setting as an option to try if yet another utility isn't desired.

If the option is set in Detailed Setup -> General, SageTV will sync the clock at the same time it does an EPG update, once a day.

BTW: Someone around here has mentioned in the past that the BIOS clock may not have a problem at all; it is the way that Windows tracks the time after it boots, since it only gets the BIOS time once when it first starts. Oh -- and some utility was mentioned for setting the time by polling the cmos clock... but I still prefer the atomic time utilities since you at least know that atomic time source _should_ be correct, whereas the cmos clock is only as accurate as what you set it to.

Thanks. I used Regedit and changed the SpecialPollInterval to 86400 to sync the time once a day. So letting windows do the time sync works for me. Changing it to 3600 should make it check the time every hour. Or change it to 14400 to have it check the time every four hours. When you change it, be sure that you set it to decimal when entering the number. Thanks again.

I use a free utility called Atomic Time Sync from AnalogX (www.analogx.com). It's reliable, very, very small, and fully configurable to run as often as you want. There are a bunch of great utilities at this site, all free.
