Problem with XVid file sound through SPDIF

I'm trying to play an XVid file with Sage for the first time. The file appears to be good - I can play it on the Sage Server and another computer without any problems. However, on my Sage client the audio stream is not being decoded - WMP is reporting that it can't tell what Codec to use. The thing is, it's just MPEG Layer-3. I've tried it with WMP, and with Sage's internal playback (by telling sage not to use an external player), to no avail.

I'm using the latest release of Sage, WMP 9, XVid 1.03 and use the NVidia DVD decoder as my default video and audio output. What in the world am I missing to make this work on my Sage client? Both computers are new, with fresh installs of Windows/etc. for Sage. I'm sure each has been cruded up a little installing codecs/etc., but I've tried to keep the state even between them.

Thanks in advance!

Not sure you can stream a non-native video type to a SageTV client. (Can someone comment on this?) I don't believe anyone ever got a .mp4 file to stream correctly to a SageTV Client, which kept me from buying the Client (so I can't test it) since I use Nero MPEG-4 to rip my DVD's.

Well, the video comes through just fine - it's just the audio that is missing. And when I play it in WMV (either through Sage as an external player, or directly), I still don't get the audio on this file - it doesn't seem to be able to detect the correct CODEC for it.

It's _not_ a stream issue, it's a codec issue.

What happens when you copy the xvid file to the client pc and then play the file on that PC's Windows Media Player?

Same thing. No Audio. I can't for the life of me figure out why it's not able to see that it should use the MPEG Layer 3 decoder. All the other computers recognize it with no trouble. The client just throws up it's hands and gives up.

I would download and install the Gordian Knot Codec pack on that machine and see if you still have problems:

Try getting Gspot to see what types of codec the file has, and also if the pc will be able to play it correctly.

It could be that the file has an ac3 audio stream or some other audio codec, in which case you'd need the correct filter - the gknot pack mentioned above should have what you need.

Thanks, the GK codec pack fixed the problem. I guess one of the codecs or mappings got zapped somewhere along the line.
