UpConversion...

Simple question (I hope)...

Which of the following two options will give me the best display for playing back DVDs on an HDTV:
A) A DVD player with upconversion
B) playing the DVD through my HTPC (DVD-ROM drive)

My PC is connected to the TV with a DVI cable. I have a 50" Samsung DLP.

Thanks!

Unless you're talking a Denon 5910, then probably the PC.

Thanks for the quick reply.

http://htpcnews.com/main.php?id=ffdshowdvd_1 is a good little article about dvd post processing. Its a little dated maybe, but the results are still very good even if you follow it step for step.

Thanks for the link Mongoose. I browsed it yesterday and it looks like it is something I'm definitely going to want to do. I did see that it said FFDshow will work with SageTV. Can I run it completely through Sage or will I just use it as a front-end for one of the third party apps they mention?

You can use FFDShow with Sage's DVD player, though I find I get better results using Zoomplayer for DVD's.

I too find that its better the use ZoomPlayer... because you can choose what codecs are being used. IF you just use SageTV I think you are forced to use FFDShow with whatever the highest merit decoder is. IE. I can make ZP use sonic and ffd, but when I use it in Sage I'm pretty sure its using NVidia+ffd. *Could be wrong tho*

Actually you can specify ffdshow as a post processor via:

videoframe/dvd_video_postprocessing_filter=

Never knew that!! Well should there be any difference between SageTV, and ZP then? ZP isn't doing anything amazing as of yet, correct? Renderless or whatever its called? I've heard thats coming later. SO does it really make a difference to use ZP over Sage?

I've used Sage since it first had a DVD player. I actually like it better because it's more remote friendly than ZP.

If you don't see it, make sure you're looking in the right properties file.

I only have one... never run the service, and the line is not in my .prop file. I am running Sage 2.1.10 so I can't explain it

Maybe it's new in 2.2, I can't remember when Jeff added it.

I haven't gotten a chance to set anything up with this yet. Are you guys using the last stable release of FFDshow (from June, 2002) or the last Alpha release (from October, 2004)?

Any tips for setting it up or should I just go through the tutorial Mongoose linked?
