Server/Client configuration questions

I was wondering if someone could help me out. I have a Sage server that I finally have setup to satisfaction. I also have one client setup as well, but with no capture card. What I would like to do is purchase another PVR-USB2 and hook it up to the client. Would the Server use this as another source to record from? When viewing LiveTV from Client, would it use the local PVR first if not recording something?

For this to work, I believe you will need a full version of SageTV on the client PC. And then set the property enable_encoding_server=true.

But someone else will have to answer how the licensing works.. not sure you can do this without having 2 SageTV full version licenses?

Then what is a network encoder exactly? Are they only available in Sage Recorder?

Another question...If I do use Client, is there a way to protect the client from being able to delete shows? Kids are sometimes button happy.

Sage Recorder is a dumb digital VCR that can be used in network mode by SageTV seen as any other local PVR. Assuming a supported PVR is in PC with Sage Recorder. Why not just connect the PVR-USB2 directly to SageTV Server? SageClient can only work with what SageTV sees anyway.

This was discussed in another thread. Unfortunately at this time Sage doesn't have security features.

I would just install the PVR-USB2 on the server, unless you have a reason why it needs to be on the client.

If you _really_ want/have to put a tuner on the client... since you already have Client, you can just get SageTVRecorder for the client PC to allow SageTV (server) to use it as a network encoder. The full version of SageTV has a way to be used as a client/network encoder & that is mentioned here. But, since you have a Client already & the PVR-USB2 is supported by SageTVRecorder (I believe), Recorder is a cheaper add-on than another copy of the server.

I prefer to have the USB2 hooked up to the client pc for two reasons.
First, I want the remotes to be uniform throughout my house(I plan on 4 clients).
Second, I already have 3 cable boxes hooked up to my server being controlled by USB-UIRT. On quite a few occasions they are all being used.
I would like the client to have it's own source to play LiveTV from so someone can't accidentally change channel during recording. I really do not care if it is able to record from. More so, just LiveTV and the remote.

Buying 4 more SageTV and USB2's is fine if it will work. Can I just use the SageTV on a client PC without favorites and have it use my SERVER's Recording folder as an import directory? Is there a way I can do this and have recording info show on the Clients?

And does anybody know if there is a way to protect videos from being deleted from import folder? Does Sage conform to XP Pro's file permissions?

Are you looking for 5 separate SageTV setups (5 servers) or 1 server + 4 clients? I'm asking that because the networked encoders will be controlled by the server, not the client. The client will not necessarily use the tuner on its own system & the recording still has to go over the network back to the server & then out to the client. All systems would share 1 set of recordings.

5 separate SageTV server setups would all have individual recordings lists & use their own local tuner. They would not talk to each other in the sense of coordinating the recording schedule, so each server's recordings would have to be imports (no show info) for all the other servers in order to play the others' recordings.

There is a property called video_lib_hide_delete=true/false to remove the delete button in the lib, it seems. But, I just noticed that while the delete button is removed, it looks like you can still use the delete command.

Whatever works.
I have 3 set top boxes on 2xusb2, 1xTV402U and 2 pvr-250's using onboard tuners on my server. I rarely ever get conflicts with this setup.
I also have one tv in the family room and 1 in each bedroom (3). The family room and master bedroom have Set top boxes as well. The other 2 bedrooms only have coax direct to tv.

If I setup just Clients than someone is bound to screw up a recording by watching LiveTV or changing channel or something. (2 boys 11 & 12, and non-tech wife)I would prefer to only allow LiveTV from the Client pc's.

Reasons:
1. I am Xvid'ing my entire dvd collection and recordings onto Server (almost 2TB) and want them available housewide.
2. Do not want to miss anything or fight with wife over what to watch on Main Server.
3. Do not want a whole bunch of devices connected to every TV (IE: cable, DVD, receiver etc...)
4. No more Lost, broken, scratched, scuffed DVD's over 1200 of them, and they cost us a lot to buy them all.

seems like Sage serversx5 would be the way to go...

How is this accomplished?

There is a delete command that you can assign to a key or remote button: highlight the video & then use the Delete button. There should be confirmation before it is deleted.

I just realized that while the command will still function there, you could simply unlink any keys/buttons from that command and that should diable it. Or, at least make it more difficult to figure out how to use it & prevent accidental deletions.
