Any Ideas?

Sage was working OK. I loaded Directx SDK by mistake and now when I try to start Sage I get a blank black screen, no menu. I then uninstalled Directx SDK and installed Directx, still black screen. I then uninstalled Sage and then reinstalled Sage, rebooted and still black screen. Do you have any ideas how I can get Sage running again?

Thanks

I think I had this problem once before. Not because of the DX SDK, but another reason.

Try finding the STV line at the bottom of your sage.properties file and delete it. Then restart sage.

Backup your properties file before you go editing it. if it doesn't fix it, restore the old version, and let us know it didn't work.

OK, this is really strange. I just upgraded from v2.1.x to v2.2.7 and had this exact same thing happen. I've tried various combinations of uninstalling and reinstalling Java and SageTV, updated the PVR-250 drivers and decoders, and nothing worked so I filed a bug report last night. My video card is an older S3 Savage4 using the drivers supplied by Windows XP dated June 2001. I found some older video drivers dated October 2000 on s3graphics.com web site. Running out of things to try, I loaded them in and now the UI works again. I'm afraid to reload the newer Windows XP driver back...and since things are working again, I think I'll leave well enough alone...

Just out of curiosity when you uninstalled Sage and reinstalled etc. was the properties file ever removed? If not back up your stuff and see what happens if you exit sage and the service and delete the properties files then start sage again.

But did you try that STV line?

Code:
wizard/widget_db_file=
try removing it when sage is shut down. delete it, save the file, close/reopen it, and make sure it took. Then restart sage.

Or do what ToxMox said, that'll work too...but my way will keep the rest of your settings.

I didn't try removing that specific line, but I did try deleting the entire properties and properties backup file and allowed SageTV to recreate them, but still got a blank screen. I also tried deleting the wiz.bin and wiz.bak files thinking maybe that was the problem, but still got a blank screen. I then tried copying the properties, properties backup, wiz.bin, and wiz.bak from the backup I made of the SageTV directory before I upgraded and still got a blank screen. The only thing I can think of is that maybe somehow a problem developed between DirectX and the video driver causing SageTV not to render the UI and reinstalling a video driver fixed the problem

Could you post the properties files that sage created.

ToxMox: If you were referring to my properties file, it's long gone... once I got things working I copied the properties and wiz files from the previous install back to get all my recordings back.

Being a glutton for punishment sometimes and risk breaking my working setup, I tried reverting back to the original driver. The original driver was the digitally signed driver that ships with Win XP for the S3 Savage4 video card and I got the same blank screen again. Re-installing the older non-digitally signed version of the driver from s3graphics.com somehow gets the UI to work again.

I tried this.

Thank you all for your help. Here is what I did so far.

1. Looked for STV line at the bottom of sage.properties file.
Could not find it. I have never used this file before.

2. Backed-up sage.properties file. Deleted sage.properties file. Rebooted started Sage – black screen.

3. Reloaded ATI 9600 XT video driver. Restarted – black screen.

I will keep plugging along to see if I can fix it. Any more ideas are appreciated.

Thanks

Problem Solved!

Apparently when I mistakenly installed DirectX SDK my ATI video files got corrupted. I then downloaded new ATI video drivers, started Sage and got a black screen. I then decided to uninstall Stage. After uninstalling it I removed all the remaining files and directories.

I then reinstalled Sage. Started the program - works fine. I hope this help others.

Thanks
