Angry SERVICES.EXE Terminated Unexpectedly with Status Code 128 -- Then Reboot

I had this problem with a Beta and thought it was solved. I have done everything that is listed in the Microsoft knowledgebase.

It only happens when I'm watching a show. It doesn't matter if I'm recording or not. I have updated all my drivers and gone to java 5.0. Nothing seems to help at all. I have no idea what to do to correct it.

Running win2K, 2 pvr-250, latest release of sage, Radeon 9200SE.
Note: On boot GVCplDrv service fails (not sure what it does or how to fix it)

Thoughts??!!??

There were at least 2 articles in the MS KB -- you saw them both?

Google had a whole bunch of links too, including comments about some worm or virus. (I have no idea if that would apply either.)

I did see both articles.
I have done a virus scan.
I did google but most of the results were related to the KB articles.

You may have luck at another forum as it doesn't seem to have anything to do with Sage. If you remove the Sage service does the problem still happen? If so then not a Sage problem.

If you feel like it download HijackThis
and run a scan with it and post the log file here. I'll look to see if there is anything weird running.

I remember fixing my boss's son's computer with a message similar to that. He didn't have a virus on his computer, but I installed Adaware SE by Lavasoft. It found lots and lots of Adware, Spyware programs on his computer. You have to run Adaware in Safe mode in order to get it to clean completely. You may even have to run it twice.

Apparently, there was a program that would send an End Task message to SERVICES.EXE and it would initiate an immediate shutdown.

It's amazing about Windows.... They build a system that is well designed with memory protection, pre-emptive multitasking, etc.... but you can always force the entire system to shut down with a simple End Task message or by a "Page Fault in a Non-Paged Area" which can be done by setting a large memory buffer to an image control (I had a bug in an old program I wrote that would do just this..... debugging it was not fun )

I ended up fixing the problem. I just formated the drive and installed XP Pro.
