Lose Sound After Pausing DVD

I've had some sound issues when watching DVD's through Sage. Everytime I pause a DVD, I lose audio when I unpause. In order to fix the audio problem, I have to stop the movie, go back through the Sage menus and restart the movie. Of course if I pause the movie again, the same thing happens. I've tried ffwding and rrwding after unpausing to see if that did anything, but to no avail. This only happens when playing DVD's. I'm able to pause and unpause Live TV and recorded shows without losing audio.

I should also mention that this problem happens when watching a DVD off the HD or through the DVD drive. I recently upgraded from v2.1 to v2.2.7, but I've had the same problem using both. I'm not exactly sure when this problem started, but this is something new.

I'm using Sonic decoders with SoundMax onboard audio drivers. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Sage (thinking it may have just been a hick-up) and I've done the same for the SoundMax drivers. I've also tried using different audio decoders (Sage default decoders and NVidia decoders), but have the same problem. Any suggestions out there?

If you are running XP SP2, then check out this thread over at Meedio

I've ran into the same problem, but have not tried to do the fix yet.

This may or may not correct/help your problem, but I would highly recommend that you purchase/install a "sound card" for your system instead of using "onboard audio".

The sound card will process your audio, freeing up CPU resources.

Ok I tried the fix and it works! I replaced the portcls.sys file in XP SP2 with one from SP1. I had to disable Windows File Protection to pull it off.

After getting the file replaced, and a reboot, all is good.

Eremon, I know where you are coming from and in the past I would have quickly agreed with you, but recent onboard audio has gotten much better in the last few years. I'm using an Intel D865PERLL motherboard with the Analog Devices AD1985 codec using the spdif out to a home theater receiver, and IMHO it is very, very good, and CPU load in not an issue at all. I don't see any need to fork over more cash for a separate sound card while the integrated one exceeds my expectations.

YMMV

Problem Solved

mwhite:

You were right on the money! I went to the Meedio post and followed the instructions to replace the portcls file. Bingo! I'm surprised this issue has not become more common with SP2. Anyway, looks like we were both in the same boat, since I'm also running the D865PERLL mobo. I have to agree that the audio quality is damn good. Not to mention the fact that it's a solid passively cooled board (shhh...nice and quiet).

Anyway, thanks for finding that post and hooking me up!

Eremon:

You have a point with running a sound card to help reduce CPU load and also improve sound quality. My brother just picked up a Chaintech AV-710 that cost about $25 (supposedly has a high-end chipset identical to a $100 sound card). Not a big investment, but so far he said he's noticed the biggest improvement with music. Now he's also running MCE05, so not sure if that means anything or not. Thanks for the input!

I just posted the file here, so no one will have to download 125MB file just to get an 80k file.

I also had this problem with the build in sound on an Intel 865PERLK motherboard.

I installed a Delta Dio sound card I had, and the problem went away. I'll try the fix for the built in sound though.
