Lightbulb VGA silencer or new video card?

I have a Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB, and I've finally isolated the high pitched whiney noise in my case to its stock cooling fan.

I experimented w/ a slot cooler, and it did help alot with the MB temperatures, but didn't slow down the radeon's fan, and it added more noise.

So, I could get a 3rd party vga cooler/silencer or just buy a new quiet video card. I'm leaning towards the 6600 or X800. The card I go with must support component out (via breakout cable or dongle) and be quiet.

Unless you can find a source for one of these:

Get a cooler. Or you could try what mdmint did, and get a T-Balancer and connect your stock VC HSF to it.

Neither of those are silent out of the box. So if you are happy with the quality of the 9800pro, why not just get an Arctic VGA silencer (Newegg link. It takes the hot air out of the box like a slot cooler. It has 2 fan speed mode, on "high" you can hear it, but on "low" it's dead quiet.

It might be cool, but no VMR9 (at least not in hardware) no hardware film detection, no pixel-adaptive deinterlacing. An MX4000 would be a rather large step down from a 9800.

I think I'm gonna get a VGA silencer that Thatdude suggested. Since I pulled out the slot cooler, my mobo temps have gone up 2-4C in all zones.

I've been looking to see if anyone has a review of a 6600GT w/ a VGA Silencer but haven't found one yet.

I have a 6600GT PCI-express and have used a Thermaltake CL-G0009 "Schooner" fanless heatpipe cooler. The heatsink is massive and it uses an external radiator (outside of the case) and it keeps the card at the same or lower temps than with that mini-helicopter of a stock fan. HOWEVER, it's about 40-bucks and it takes up an adjacent expansion slot. (see attached pic)

Now the TiVo is louder than my HTPC!
