Can I move or copy sagetv files

Can I move or copy these (mpg) files for editing and DVD Authoring or does Sagetv get messed up by the fact that they have been changed, put in a different location or resized?

Best to copy them to a directory foreign to SageTV and make changes there. SageTV needs to be stopped before deleting them. Don't delete anything while SageTV service or GUI is running.

I usually copy the files to a folder called "transfer" which is shared on my network. I then copy them to my main machine which has the editing software on it, do the editing, rename the file (usually to the series name & episode number) then copy back to the sage machine. I then move the file to the sage import video directory, then delete the original file in the sage gui.

I move files to locations outside of SageTV all the time while it is running. After a period of time, it seems like minutes sometimes, Sage will 'notice' and remove the shows from it's lists. You loose the database information, of course.

The few times I tried to just delete a show file in My Computer, I'd get an XP file lock error.

If the show is recording or playing, you will get a lock.

I just moved about 20 Daily Shows last night with no problem.

OT, a neat thing I discovered is that you can view a show in VideoReDo while Sage is running as long as you are using Overlay. You can even view a show that is currently recording. Pretty neat.

I delete files in my recording dirs all the time too -- I have auto-deletion turned off for partial recording snippets. Every so often, I check the recording dirs for small files & delete them (and perhaps a few shows I don't want any more while I'm there). The only thing I can't delete are recordings in progress, for obvious reasons. Like glbrown said: SageTV notes that the recordings are missing at the next roll call.

Ryel: I think this was indicated above, but any videos that you edit really ought to be placed in an import dir for SageTV afterwards, since they will no longer be seen as the original recording anyway.
