USB-UIRT usage clarification please.

Seems like the quick solution to getting control of my SAGE box is to drop the Hauppauge Remote and go "aftermarket".

I did a bit of research and think the USB-UIRT is what I need (it's overkill actually). The Company web site mentions the software GIRDER as required to function. I also read the SAGE manual, and got a distinctly different impression. Seems from the manual, SAGE supports the UIRT natively.

Does this mean all I need to do is:

1. Install USB connector
2. Install drivers
3. "Activate" USB UIRT support in SAGE..??????(need to do some more reading)
4. Use SAGE setup to map each of my remotes IR signals to a specific command. (need to read up on this as well)

Seems like I will not need Girder....right? It also seems like I can even use my Hauppauge remote control and map those codes to SAGE commands.
Or did I miss something and do need to use girder?

Any one use this setup and notice any lag or delay?

Thanks.

Raymond

You are correct on your assumptions. I have this setup as well and don't notice any lag or delay on my setup. The only delay I experience is the obvious one that happens when Sage has to send channel changes via the USB UIRT to my cable box. As for Sage responding to my commands from my remote it is pretty much instant.

Disclaimer: YMMV when it comes to delays. I just don't want to be held accountable if you go this route and have delays.

Thats good news! (I wont hold you accountable for any delays ) I'm not going to be using a cable box though, and this brings up the next question that fits in perfectly as I read the manual:

Page 112 of the SAGE manual (starting with Step 5) is about setting up the USB-UIRT in sage. It seems they assume that most people will be controlling a cable box or other type of device as well. I'm not sure what steps to cut out if I can or if I need to create this "false" cable box even though I don't have one in order to use the UIRT.???? Let me read some more, but if you know of an easir way (thru the setup menu as opposed to setting up a new TV tuner), please share the info.

Many thanks

Raymond

You don't have to do anything like that. Just set sage in the commands menu to USB for the Infrared Receiver port and link the commands... simple and works very well.

Just in case this one step isn't clear: in the Setup Wizard, Step 5 "Select the Tuning Plugin" will only appear if you previously told SageTV that you are using an external receiver (converter box) in steps 3A or 3B. Since you aren't, the only thing to be done after installing the USB-UIRT & its drivers is to tell SageTV to use the USB-UIRT on the USB port and then map the commands, as Wheemer said above. All of that is in Detailed Setup -> Commands, in Chapter 5 of the manual, around p. 144 or so.
