I have a 6600GT connected through DVI to my HDTV. I run it at 1280x720p with no problem. I can't crank ffdshow up to its max settings, but then I don't know if I could do that even with a 6800, and it may be a limitation of my CPU, too (athlon64 3000+). If you don't use ffdshow, then you'll have no problem at all with the 6600GT.

Oops! I forgot to mention that the 6600 and 6600GT (as well as the 6200) have additional video processing capabilities that are not in the 6800 cards.

The only thing missing on the 6800s (and it's present on the PCIe version of the non-GT/Ultra 6800) is WMV accelleration. Everything else functions just fine.

In the pursuit of a quiet HTPC/PC, I found this site:
http://www.overclockers.com/tips/
There are lots of home brew idea's that really helped me in coming up with a quite machine. I've also added intake filters that keep my box lint, dust, and around here dog hair free

Enjoy,
RedR

Stanger,

What CPU cooler do you use?
I have just upgraded to the Zalman 7700, the really large one with a 120mm fan on it.

Its the only fan in the case, but I still can hear it

I have tried slowing it down, but then I do need to turn it up for when its 100% for more than a few seconds.

I also have tried Speedfan. The problem with that is the fan makes a wurg wurg noise when connected to the m/b which it doesnt make when connected to a normal power psu lead.

And there was I thinking all I needed to do was get rid of the GPU and PSU fans for silence!

I've got a 7000AlCu controlled by my T-Balancer. It runs about 30% or so most times. I've never noticed it speed, up. What CPU are you using?

The 7000AlCu cools a P4 3.0C at the minimum speed on the inline Zalman fan mate on my upstairs HTPC. The 7700s should cool a 2.4GHz P4 without breaking a sweat. Something sounds wrong - I'd try reapplying the heatsink with a fresh application of heatsink paste (clean everything back to metal first I find that WD40 does this nicely).

Cheers

Eric

I prefer alcohol to clean the base. I'd avoid WD40 as it has some lubricants in it that will leave a residue.

I agree 100%. So does Artic Silver, one the best thermal pastes IMO. See their installation instructions which include cleaning and what and what not to use!

@ stanger89
A very good point, you do need to wash it off afterwards (with washing up detergent). Methanol will do the job even better (though it won't smell nearly as nice while doing it).

Hey, I like the smell of Methanol, of course wouldn't use mine to clean anything since it's got oil in it.
