Error -6, 0x80004005

For some reason this error started popping up on Friday:
There was a capture error in playback. Error -6, 0x80004005: There was a problem setting up hardware video compression. Please be sure you have the latest drivers installed for your capture device, and that they are installed correctly.

The only change to the system on Friday (that I recall) was the installation of a Chaintech AV-710 soundcard. I wasn't able to find much information here regarding the cause/solution for this error, so I thought I'd post my findings.

After some investigation I found that the error first occurs when a show is scheduled to record. It may pop up several more times unless the recording is actually cancelled in Sage. Regardless, the show is not recorded. Since I use both a PVR-150MCE and PVR-250, I wanted to determine if this was an error with either or both cards. As it turns out, the error only occurred with the PVR-150MCE.

Fortunately, uninstalling and reinstalling the PVR-150MCE from Device Manager solved the problem. However, I am still unclear as to why this error started in the first place. The sound card install is the only thing I can come up with.

Probably the more important issue here is that even though the PVR-250 still functioned, nothing recorded because of the PVR-150MCE error. It would be nice if Sage could revert to using an alternate capture device as a fail-over when such an error occurs. I did not have the encoder_merit configured in sage.properties, but I have a feeling that this does not really address the issue.

Does anyone know if this fail-over functionality exists in Sage? Sorry if this question has been asked before - I wasn't able to find anything in my searches.
