pvr-350 PQ settings

I'd like to clarify a few things if possible. I'm using pvr-350 and only interested in picture quality via it's internal hardware decoder. Currently just considering standard TV. I've a standard widescreen crt tv connected to the 350's tv-out connector. Having spent a few hours testing various recording quality settings I've come to the conclusion that its a battle between dvd-long and dvd-extralong as to which gives the best quality/disc space balance.
Am I right in thinking that s/w decoders play no part in my setup, that I'm just using the 350's on board h/w?
Are there any other configuration settings that I need to consider?

TIA

Andy

only the recoding quality is going to affect you. I would purchase another harddrive and crank it up to dvd standard.
