SageRecorder isn't required to use SageTV and the 500 works just fine with SageTV so you'll be just fine recording with it.

It simply means PVR500 supported by main app SageTV with SageTV running on same PC as PVR500 is installed in, but PVR500 not supported by SageTV with PVR500 installed in another PC because SageRecorder app does not support PVR500 so can't use it for networked encoder mode. (Other PVRs like PVR250 can reside in another PC and be used by main SageTV app.) However, I've heard that main app SageTV can be also be used in network mode which means the PVR500 can be used as network encoder, though it's not officially supported yet.
