Not sure if this will help, but you can use it to get you on to Windows without requiring login.
START > RUN > type "control userpasswords2" You can also create another local account on the machine and assign the scheduled tasks to start with that account. |

is there a utility to browse the contents of a backup set produced by this tool?

If by "this tool" you mean NTBackup, then yes, NTBackup itself can browse the contents of the backup sets it creates. That's how you choose which files to restore.

I've never used the built-in Windows backup utility (I have XP Pro). So I gave it a try - trying to get Wiz.* and *.properties.
The backup file it created contained, instead, all of the sage folders and some files, but not wiz.*. File-in-use. Getting the scheduler setup for once-a-day at 2AM was frustrating and non-intuitive. Esp. for my password-less login. I'll choose to stick with my Second Copy software. http://www.centered.com/ Inexpensive, Intuitive. Reliably used for a long time here, for Sage data, family photos, etc. and TruImage for drive imaging. Last edited by stevech; 12-27-2007 at 05:40 PM. |

XP's Backup Utility has Volume Shadow Copy, meaning it can backup files that are in used. I have tested it with SageTV and it works as stated in the first post of this thread. Make sure it is not disabled in the Advanced settings where there's a checkbox that says "Disabled volume shadow copy". The only other thing I can think of is to make sure to run under an Administrator account.
The purpose of using this tool is that it comes with Windows and works well as a wiz.bin and sagetv.properties backup tool at no extra cost. Of course, if you choose to pay for a commercial backup tool, that is your choice.

Just wanted to thank you for this thread. This is the best way to backup up Sage's settings in my opinion.
