Drrrooooooool. It'll try it out tonight and see what transpires..

Any chance we could get this working with multiple STBs?

Okay, I'm having some luck but I'm not having some luck. I can view premium hd channels (that will one day be 5c'ed i'm sure, but not now) and plain old sd channels in both vlc and sgrecorder, and I can change channels with the cmd line. However, SGR does not show up as a tuner in Sage. I also am not able to relocate the dump.ts file, it just tells me that the file properties cannot be accessed.

Where do I start looking for issues?

tia

You need to add the encoder properties into the sage.properties file. See this doc. Afterward, make sure sgrecorder is running before Sage launches. To relocated the dump file you should be able to do that right when you add the dump filter or follow the directions for setting up graphedit dx9 also in the doc.

You took the words right out of my keyboard Kricker!

As for the earlier question on dependability, that is a tough one. I had an incident just a couple of days ago that required that I unplug and plugh back in the firewire cable but I had that happen on the MCE firewire as well. Not at all often thankfully. The only real helpful thing I can say is that it is related to the STBs or the firewire connection.

And...

Man has the activity in this thread picked up lately!!! I best get off my a$$ and rewrite those instructions like I said I would!!!

i am right there with codemonkeydave, naughtyus, and I think kricker. Everything works well until I throw sage into the mix. I can view/hear both sd and hd via vlc, i can change channels over firewire with channel.exe, sgr creates a dump file. But when I go to set up a video source (thanks to kricker i now have sgr as a source), i get no preview, and no signal later in channel setup. I have tried the sage, powerdvd, and nvidia codecs, and the sgr debug report always does the same thing. Two autotune attempts, and then nothing but getfilesize" messages as soon as the "no signal" error occurs.

anybody shed some light on this for us?

P.S> sage is working fine with my other hd and sd tuners

Per my other thread:

Hello Dave,

Thank you for your email regarding our cable service.

The 1394 FireWire ports are active. You can use them to stream video to
your PC, but we do not support this function. You may run into Copyright
protection issues if you try to record the content, or if your hard
drive stores the content before playing it.

We don't provide technical support for streaming video to a PC, so I'm
unable to answer your questions regarding additional methods.

We hope that we have been able to provide you with the information you
requested. If we have not, or if we can be of any additional service to
you, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Sincerely,
Brad

So at this point it has to be a software/driver issue. Do we have anyone out there willing to build/find the missing pieces to make this work?

but we are recording into the dump file, so it shouldn't be a copyright stuff.

It takes a looong time for the preview to appear in channel setup if ever. Sometime I hear audio way before I see the video. It tunes much faster from the guide (but still kinda slow, and when it can't tune, it takes ~ 30secs to quit trying). I ended up adding the channels, then going to the guide to test them. Then going back to the setup to disable what doesn't work. Whatever you see in VLC you should see in Sage. I am using the Microsoft decoder for video and Sage mpeg for the audio ATM.

I guess you took that response differently than I did.

I was excited to hear that Cox confirmed that the firewire port IS active. As I've posted in all of my threads, I'm not even really interested in recording to my PC. My goal right now is just to get video from the SA8300HD to my PC and be able to change channels via firewire.

Recording and copyright concerns don't mean much to me right now when I can't even view the content coming from the box.

Latest Firewire Instructions Rewrite

OK Folks...

I rewrote what I thought needed rewriting.

These new instructions cover all of the basic requirements as well as cover setting up two or more STBs via firewire.

que3xp-

thank you so much for clarifying the setup process!! I think my issue was the bits and pieces of info, some of which were outdated.

Well, I am functional, but not ready for prime time. I can't change from one stb channel to another without issues. It promptly will change the channel on the stb itself, but the screen goes black, then freezes on an image from the first channel. Sometimes, if I go to a non-stb channel then come back, it will be all right, but the menus and animations go SSSSSSSOOOOOOOOO SSSSSSLLLLLLOOOOOOWWWWWWWW. If I push it enough, eventually it will throw up a video error, but when it works, it seems fine.

I hope it's not my rig, I thought it would have plenty of horsepower. Any thoughts?

Also, two more quick ones: where do I put sleep.exe (i searched my computer, but it wasn't found), and is there any way at all to have sage running as a service with an stb? I ask because I know one of these late night sessions I will forget to restart the UI, and miss recordings.

p.s. somehow all of this just nuked my remote settings. the fun continues!!

thanks again for the time you put into the instructions!

Que3jxp,

Thanks for writing this doc, i have had problems setting this up in the past and i am ready to try it again.

Is the fact that we should not run sage as a service due to the timeing of it starting before SGR? If so, could we not set the sage service as a manual start, and then start the service in the batch file using the sc command after starting SGRs?

Thanks,
Tom

Well, what are the specs on your system? I will say that I did have that SLOW issue but it seemed to clear itself up quickly and was only occurring on the slower of the two systems.

Sleep.exe should be put somewhere in the "path". One good place is the system32 folder.

As for the service issue, the post right after yours has a good idea that never occurred to me. It should work.

Overall though, if I was going to do anything, I would relocate the STBs to a dedicated PC and set the SageTV tuner entries to look to the IP of the STB "server" PC. This should likely only be done on a gigabit network.

Yup! I did some testing of starting SageTV first and then the SGR sessions. It never worked.

HOWEVER! Your suggestion on calling the service via the commandline should work. I really feel silly for not thinking of that one! Good catch!

specs are in my sig line:

Server: WinXP Gigabyte 965p-DS3 v1.0, e4300 oc'ed to 3ghz, 2gb adata 800ddr, 160gb main drive, 500gb files driveNvidia 8500GT, PowerDVD7
Working on firewire tuning, 2 QAM via HDHR, Wintv 1600 HVR doing OTA and analog
Some off-brand combo tv tuner/modem that might one day give me caller id
Piece of %$^ Pinnacle USB2 PCTV for analog because it would collect dust otherwise
3 Media MVPs

Server is dedicated but not headless. HD plays smoothly, so it doesn't seem like a video issue, and the cpu never goes too high, so it seems like it's just something within sage. I can change channels at will from the command prompt with no issues at all.

Sorry. I missed that...

Anyways, that is a very good amount of horsepower. Can't say that I have had any experience with that many tuner devices in a system so I have no way to intelligently comment on any possible undesireable behaviour.

I have full access to all of the channels from my cable providor so I rely excluseively on the firewire setup.

I plan on doing this for my 1 of 8 tuners in the future. QAM to me seems easier and I don't have to pay $6/month/STB to do it.

However, even when I do have the time to get this working, I plan on having a contingency plan to move back to S-Video and a blaster to change the channels. By saying you rely on it, you may want to have a similar plan as I have heard that cable companies have shut these down without notice. Or am I missing something?

You are right that it is a risk to depend on the 5C status from my cable providor but fortunately, Rogers Canada has not shown any interest in locking it down. Further, the cable network in New Brunswick is so bizzare, there is no major fear of a change for a long time.

Us poor saps still don't even have access to a dual tuner HDPVR!!!

On the upside, I still have my hauppauge tuner cards from my MCE Firewire setup and I never intend on getting rid of those.

As for QAM, we are screwed up here in the northern New England/ Maritime provinces. Although there will be OTA digital, QAM is locked down up in this neck of the woods.

My one real fear is that Rogers turns on 5C before OTA is deployed. From the Fredericton area (Where I live), I should be able to get all of the major networks from both the USA and Canada via OTA.

Firewire Channel Changing Problems with SA 4350HD

I just got two SA 4350HD boxes from the cable company and connected them via firewire. Installed the drivers from Timmmoore. I'm able to capture with CapDVHS and view live content in VLC. What I'm having trouble with is getting the boxes to change channels over firewire.

I'm using 3 and 4 in cmd line as they're the panels. Tried 1 and 2 just for the hell of it but each time the computer reboots immediately as expected. I haven't even begun to configure Sage since the boxes won't respond to the cmd line. Anyone have any suggestions?
