I've been thinking about things and if SMART is indeed better de-interlacing, then that explains what's happened. Because the banding is still there, it's just nowhere nearly as noticeable since the edges of the banding are much smoother. That would make sense from what I understand about deinterlacing after reading the article stanger pointed to.

Hi Bo

I had come to the same conclusion for my own setup (that it was deinterlacing) -- my artifacts were combined with that "soft" look (I can't remember the technical name, but I read the article that (I think) stanger just posted previously and it pointed me in that direction.

Since it seems to suggest that your TV may have better hardware deinterlacing, perhaps you could solve this that way -- I think you're outputting to your monitor, yes? Or using a monitor output?
