MVP Client Service
I mentioned before a goal of being able to reboot my server and have everything working automatically. Obviously, I'm running Sage in service mode. I ended up trying firedaemon to get my clients running as a service. There's a free trial, and it worked so well for two weeks, that I bought it. About $25. It's pretty straight forward. The important parameters:
Name: MVP1 Type: Automatic with recovery. I think I have about 10000 ms allowed for it to start. Program: sageclient.exe (make sure you're running it from the correct directory) Parameters: multi Environment: Use the two variables Matt has in the startmvpclient.cmd file. Set MVP=MVP1, and CLASSPATH variable. Priority: Above normal (as specified in Matt's properties file) You can specify "allow interaction" if you want, or "hidden". No need to use the true/false setting in mvp.properties. You can also specify service dependencies. Someone else talked about making the client services Sageservice dependent, but why? If the service shut down the clients can keep running, and reconnect when the service starts. Mine run 24/7, but you have the option to schedule the service only during certain times, or to schedule a restart. I guess you could cut off the kids MVP at bedtime.... I also have DirMon running as a service. It calls Show analyzer t generate the .txt comskip files. I'll put yak.exe in there as well for the caller ID popup. If you have a dedicated server, I guess none of this makes sense. But I don't want the kids logging me off to play a game. Also if something goes wrong with the system, you can tell the wife to just reboot. What Is FireDaemon?! FireDaemon is a utility that allows you to install and run virtually any native 32/64-bit application or script (eg. BAT/CMD, Perl, Java, Python, Ruby, TCL/TK) as a Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003 & Vista service. Why Install An Application As A Service?! Installing and running an application as a service has many benefits. For example, the ability to run when no one is logged in, the ability to run as a specific local or domain user and to run for specific periods during the day, week or month. This makes systems administration and management much simpler, minimises application downtime and secures applications against accidental or intentional shutdown. FireDaemon makes it easy to configure your application as a service. Use the GUI or setup the installation via the command line (using XML configuration files). FireDaemon features a low memory overhead, negligable CPU consumption, subprocess prioritisation and CPU binding, custom environments, scheduling, auto-popup closing, plus process monitoring (via watchdog) and logging to the event log and on-disk log files.

MVP Multispeed FF/RW
Anyone have luck with the multispeed import module and the MVP? Multispeed works awesome on my server, so I tried it on the MVP client. It kind of worked like pause and froze the display untill I hit play. Is the MVP lacking some capabilities...hardware and/or software. I've never tried using the MVP for it's original purpose. Does smooth FF work with the Happauge software?

Registry Tweak
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters] "TcpWindowSize"=dword:000f4240 "Tcp1323Opts"=dword:00000001 Matt's FAQ mentioned this tweak from Happauge to increase MVP performance. I haven't done it because I don't know what it does. Will it decrease performance for everything else? Any noticable increase in MVP performance?

MediaMVPs + LiveTV
Assume this type of setup
1. HTPC running SageTV server, this PC has the PVR's attached to it and is recording all the content. It has two Hauppauge capture cards in it. 2. One Licensed copy of Sagetv client on a second PC, with 2 instances of sagetv client running on it, along with the MediaMVP addin/plugin software installed on it. 3. Two MediaMVP's on the network and attached to Standard TV sets, talking to the instances running on second PC. 4. Third PC running standard sagetv client software (Version 4.0 of sage everywhere) What I am wondering is, how many people could watch live TV using this type of setup. I think if both PVR's are busy, that no one can watch Live TV...but everyone could watch whatever was being recorded on one of the PVR's??? But if nothing is being recorded on main server, than 2 people/users could be watching livetv at the same time? Thanks for any clarification on this |

The number of people who can watch 'live' tv at the same time = the number of capture devices you have. If your two Hauppauge cards are PVR-500's, then you have four capture devices, and you can watch four different live shows at once.
If a capture device is already recording something, then you can't use it to watch something else. But of course you can watch whatever it is recording. All of this has nothing at all to do with the MediaMVP. The MVP is just another client. |

MVP--Aspect Ration Problem with resizing?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: This was copied over from a new post i started yesterday but got overlooked. Hi all, i have been having toubles (again) with the aspect ratio settings. Just got a new TV (exchanged my 42" LCD RP for a 42" plasma) and it seems as thought the video is not resizing properly. I can adjust the AR settings to center the picture, but i seem to still be missing about an 1.5 inches on my right side. It is noticeable when you change the channel--and my directv UI pops up and it is a little cut off on the right hand side. I pause on this screen, then try to adjust the AR's settings, it does seem to move the window around, but not what is actually on the TV (the DTV UI)? Kind of weird. Also note, that this is on an MVP so that might be the issue too. I have read that the MVP doesn't support the AR options so that might just be a limitation. I am only using this as a quick fix until the Sage extender comes out with HD outputs...anyone else driving a HD display with the MVP? Do the AR settings not work with MVP? If they don't work--then i can just wait (hint hint hint sage) Thanks JUC

You have to run the original Hauppauge MVP Software to configure the 4x3/16x9 setting (or the flicker reduction). Once set there, thoses settings should also be used by the MVPClient. -Matt |

Matt, thanks a lot--that should solve my problem. I'm guessing it is just defaulting to 4:3 but am not sure why it would cut off some of the screen like it is doing. Will try tonight.
Thanks JUC

So the hard reboot that the thread mentions didn't solve it? I am having the same thing happen to me. I plan on trying the hard boot trick and also adjusting the display to 16:9 in the Hauppauge software and hopefully that will fix it. If not--oh well as this is just a temporary solution until Sage comes out with their extender--and it better be quick.......because i need something better on my new TV Thanks JUC

well, the hard reboot didn't work. It is not that much off but about 1-2" on only the right hand side. All logos and scrollign text are still visible. Only noticeable when there is text that should be centerred on the screen--but it is hugging the right hand side instead. My wife hasn't noticed it yet and I don't plan on telling her either Looks like it is not resizing properly. Oh well, this is just a temporary fix because my shuttle died. Once i either get that fixed or sage comes out with their extender I will just move the MVP to my bedroom.
On a side (and not worthy of another thread), if anyone has any experience with a 'corrupt or missing hal.dll' when installing windows on a clean install please PM me. All the fixes i have seen on the internet are NOT working. Thanks JUC

This thread / project dead?
Been a while since there's been any activity here. Is Matt's MVP product dead because some Frey product has replaced it? It still works great for me, and wanted to know what the exact MVP plan is. Also if it is compatible with v2.2.8 or only v4.x.
As a quick side note question, as per Matt's, how do people start the MVP processes? I do it manually if/when I reboot (infrequently), but wanted to know if there were timing issues. Thanks gang! |

v4.1 availability announcement SageTV Media Extender info Store links: License for Media Extender (MVP or Placeshifter) MVP + License MVPs are sold out currently New forum section: SageTV Media Extender This plugin is great, but the built-in support works better, in my opinion, since the UI is drawn using the MVP's hardware, instead of drawn on the PC & sent to the MVP -- means a more responsive UI & less cpu usage on the server. The MVP still decodes the media itself, of course. And, there is transcoding support that is being improved in the betas. Some advantages of built-in extender support. - Andy

If you are running an old version of SageTV and do need it, I still have it sitting in my downloads folder. Send me a private message with an Email address I can send it to.
