The MVP Client should only add a few seconds to the startup time of the client. Can you try to run a regular SageTV Client w/o MVP plugin to see if this fixes the startup problem?

What I have noticed is that the SageTV Client startup time largely depends on the installation location. If started off a network drive or even off a locally mapped drive, startup time will be much longer than if started off a local drive.

You don't need a Client license if you run the MVP Client as your one and only SageTV GUI. Otherwise (and this is probably the standard case), you'll need one, This client license is good for any number of MVPs, BTW.

See here for more information about installation options.

Now loading faster...

Thanks Matt, you at least confirmed that what I was seeing was not normal. My sage is running locally.

I tried to reinstall sage but that made no difference. Running service mode even just loading normal UI took as long.

Final solution was to upgrade to Java 1.4.2.06. Now loads much faster. I had been using 1.4.2.05.

I still have some testing to do to see how stable this will be (before tomorrow), but it looks good right now.

I notice some oddities in the UI now though. Example, when I move the cursor the highlighted items are not changing. Anyone see anything like that before?

Also, since I am unfamiliar with the service mode, when the UI says "service lost connection, will resume when restarted" (or something like that) will whatever I am recording be interrupted? I know that is probably not necessarily a question about MVP related issue but I figure people here would have much experience.

I'm successfully using 1.5.0_01 already which should be even faster.

There is a config property in sageclient.properties for this (ui/focus_follows_mouse=). It's off for the MVP Client by default.

The question is why the connection got lost. If it's because the server is down, nothing will be recorded . If it's because the network is down but the service runs, (scheduled) recording will go on. Recording of Live TV (time-shifting) will stop/be interrupted when the server loses connection to the client.

Service drops

Thanks again.

I think the service is dropping out and having to restart. It only happened once but now has me a little nervous.

Do I need to stop the service before editing the properties file to make the change you suggested?

The property only affects the UI and not the service (which is UI-less), so you have to shutdown the UI (SageTV.exe or SageTVClient.exe, depending on which UI mode you use) before changing sageclient.properties.

Matt,

I noticed an annoying behavior and I don't know if it is SageTV or the Media MVP pluggin. I am running 2.2.5 Beta. Last night I set "American Dad" to record and added 45 minutes of extra padding at the end since the Super Bowl went long and "The Simpsons" started 15 minutes into the slot for "American Dad". I started watching it part way through the recording (30 minutes after it started) and I was not able to fast forward once it was playig beyond the boundaries of the time slot.

I will have to do some testing on my main client to see if the behavior is the same, but it seems odd that fastforward is no longer available after the shows original air time is past even though it is not scheduled to stop recording for another 45 minutes.

I think I'm gonna go buy an mvp today to try this plugin out. I was just curious however how is the menu speed on this plugin. Is it slow to respond or is it generally responsive? thanks

Can't repro this here, but I'm still at 2.1.10. Were Favorites involved & and you have remove_padding_on_back_to_back_favorites=true set in sage.properties?

There were some posts about speed here (starting with post 342). Typical menu navigation speed is about 0.5 to 2 seconds, depending on the power of the PC hosting the MVP Client. I see ~0.5s quite consistently with a Pentium 3 GHz.

Matt,

I have remove_padding_on_back_to_back_favorites=false.

Also I converted this favorite to a manual recording and then changed the padding to 45 Minutes. The File did record for that time and the media MVP played all of it, but I just was not allowed to fast forward.

I will do more testing tonight.

I just got a mvp today but I am having trouble getting the mvp to connect using this plugin. I set up my mvp to connect through an extra ethernet card that I have in my host pc. To do this I followed the instructions on hauppauges site. Do I have to make any changes to the settings of this software if I am connecting the mvp to my computer in this way? Right now the screen shows Contacting MediaMVP Bootserver... then changes to Contacting DHCP Server.... it just goes back and forth between those two on the tv screen.

I've played around with this plugin for an hour and I still can't get it to work. I've read the help and tried changing things but no luck. Basically I want to connect the media mvp to my system via a crossover cable to an unused ethernet port in my computer (I use a wireless card to gain internet access). With this setup I'm not really clear how I configure the network settings to get it to work. Any instructions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think what may be happening is that your MVP is searching for a DHCP server to get its IP address. The network card is not passing it so the machine cycles through the startup routines you see. I thought somewhere in this thread it was mentioned that to configure the MVP this way that a software bridge might have to be used. I cannot say that it will work but you might try it if you are running XP. Here is a nice explanation of how it works and how to set it up if you want to try that. A quick read seems to indicate that it may offer some help in your dilema. Other than that I can only offer that you try a connecting them with a hub\switch if you have one.

Like Toddly said, there's DHCP problem with direct crossover connections. See here (2nd part of my post) for more infos.

I just wanted to post that I've found a work around for using the mvp via a crossover cable and an extra ethernet card in your computer. Nothing scientific but it seems to work for although your experience may vary. I simply start the Hauppauge mvp software and let it load up (I previous configured the network as hauppauge instructs on their site for crossover connections). Once the software is loaded I choose stop in the hauppauge mvp folder. This bring me to a screen on the tv that says something like searching for servers. While this screen is flashing I then open the Sagetv mvp plugin and it is then able to connect.

I've noticed this kind of behavior too. Whenever I have problems with my MVP connecting, I do exactly what you mentioned worked for you. I just didn't see your post in time. Works 50/50 for me.

Divx support?

Matt,

First off, I want to thank you for your hard work! I just purchased SageTV a week ago, and the main reason that I did was to use your plugin to watch my shows on my TV. Anyways, I noticed that Hauppage has released an update to allow DivX movies to be played on the MVP. Has anyone had any experience with this yet? I know that it does the transcoding on the PC side to convert the video from divx to MPEG2. Any chance we might see this in a future Sage Client??? Thanks!

Davy

Thanks for all the hard work Matt, having the ability to use my mvp as front end has been great but I've been trying to work this problem out myself for a few days now and still no go. My 1st mvp is playing fine, no problems there, when I start the 2nd mvp it conenects fine and I can make my way through the ui. As soon as I start watching either live tv or a recorded show the client will reboot. Just the 2nd mvp, the first is still playing fine, from there the 2nd mvp says connecting for ever but never does. If I unplug the power to the 2nd mvp and plug it back in all comes up fine until I try playing a video again. According to the mvp log there was a java exception and the connection was forcibly closed by the host. I don't know if it's because I'm trying this using a trial version or not. I even went out and brought another mvp thinking that maybe my other one was flaky but the new one did the same thing. I think I must be missing a step somehwere, I changed the properties for mvp 2 (mvp-mvp2) and also delete the load at startup class line. Right now I have no clue as to what's causing the 2nd mvp to flip out while mvp1 is running fine.

is thier a remote ini file or similar with this plugin. I have setup a JP1 remote to control the MVP, but I want to configure more bottons. Anyone know the list of codes that can be recognized?
I have duplicated all the original buttons from the silver remote, but my JP1 has more that I could map.
Thanks,
