Here's an update for those of you wondering why Cayars hasn't been able to respond lately: I heard from someone who had talked to him that he has continued to have hardware problems and has been unable to get online much at all. He hopes to have everything repaired soon and will be back as soon as he can. I'm sure most people here know how much trouble hardware failures can be and will wish him best of luck getting everything taken care of.

... I'll now return you back to your regularly scheduled STV discussion ...

Man, if you guys only knew.

Finally, finally got things back together. "When it rains it poors".

For everyone reading this:
If you have made a VIP contribution, you should have received an email or PM from me (just got done them all). If you didn't get one or the other send me a PM here on the forum and I'll get back to you shortly.

For everyone: It's been a rough ride around here and I won't bore you with details but let's just say if it could have went wrong it did. In the last few weeks I've been through hardware issues, cut fiber connection (comcast) to lightning striking the house and wiping out lots of things including 6 or 7 computers...

I've got a few computers back enough to start working on the STV again which is probably all you guys care about

I'll try and get a new release out by the end of the weekend (overdue) and I need to get cought up but I'd guess most of the conversation is probably "where's carlo" type thing, so hopefully there isn't too much but I'll find out soon enough

Hope all has been well for you guys.

Oh, that wasn't bad at all, there was hardly any messages to read. I guess without me around there wasn't much to "talk about".

BTW, not that I plan or anything like this happening again but just in case I'm going to PM my home phone number to a couple of guys here on the system like ToxMox and Opus4 so just in case, they could always give me a phone call and atleast relay any information to you guys. In hind site I wish I had done this before, but who would have ever thought... I can only imagine some of the things running through peoples heads.

Welcome back! I'm glad to hear things are starting to come back to life for you. I hope the 350 I sent you wasn't one of the pieces of hardware that got fried.

We definitely missed having you around. Wasn't as much fun as usual.

It was actually safe. However, I think it contributed to the initial hard drives demise since it added a lot of heat to inside of the case. I'm now running HDD monitoring to watch the temps and with the 350 in there even with 3 fans it's still 20 degrees to hot...

When I replaced the 2 fried drives I checked the temps and noticed the problem. Took out the 350 and put it back in the box. It's good for you because that machine got "burnt" bad. The lightning took out my Onkyo receiver, DVD player, Sony TV and a few other Home Theater pieces too.

BTW, this equipment had 2 surge surpressors inline and a UPS and they did basically nothing...

Ouch! That all sounds like more than a huge pain! Don't anyone ever ask: "What else can go wrong!?"

And, when I said I was told you were going to try to get back 'soon', I didn't realize it was this soon.

*runs over to cayars*

WE MISSED YOU!

Sorry to hear about your problems though...

Just FYI, since you talked about tempatures... I have a big "box" fan in front of my open server case in the back room that holds my 4 250's and 800GB of storage. HDD temps run about 65-75 degrees using that cooling option. This runs to two clients on a 10/100 network. this way my machine that works hard is more than cooled. and my clients can be really, reallly quiet. Just my $0.02

Hmm, lemme get out that digital cam and take a pic.

(hmm, interesting that my camera was good enough not to blur the moving fan blades.)

In any case, welcome back Carlo!

Sorry to hear about the lightning. You didn't happen to have any of those surge protectors with that nifty built in insurance did you?

Nah, you've already thought of that.

I've always wondered if those manufacterers would deliver if something actually got fried.

Glad to read that you've gotten at least a couple of systems working. I hope you didn't loose any 'real' work.

Got the 18D external comskip working and on showings of MASH it runs but when I try to play one of them it says the show is over and gives ERROR (-4). Is it detecting the old film show as all a commercial? Some other shows I watch like Modern Marvels worked flawlessly.

Yea, they were high end surge protectors and I've already sent them back along with a copy of the listed equipment and pictures of the fried components. We'll see what happens.

If nothing else I could put some of it through my home owners insurance which I'm sure will be a pleasent experience.

For kicks, try running one of these problem shows via the manual comskip detection and let us know what happens.

You had every point of entry protected and still got fried? Like your cable wire and network cabling and phone cable(like anyone uses modems anymore ) etc?

On a side note, Carlo, I'd like to mention that you probably read some posts awhile back that stated a few of us where having to restart the external commercial detect program every day or two. I'm happy to say that for some reason it got "better" on my machines and I've been able to keep it running for a week or so straight now. So I'm not sure what changed, other then some windows updates, but it now seems to not be hanging up.

By manual comskip I take it that you mean the one internal to the STV correct?

Well I tried the Internal CS processor on an episode and it worked flawlessly, no clue why the external one is having trouble.

I was having trouble with the external CD getting stuck on files as well, I finally just created a batch file that kills the CD process and starts the batch file over again. I scheduled it to do this every six hours and I have had a lot more success with CD since then.
