re: audio sync issue
it turns out not to have been exoplayer or sage client at all. i noticed that the shield restart was running slow (i.e. formation of the 'android' logo at reboot) and the shield somehow was corrupted. after i power cycled the shield, the 'android' logo appeared much faster and the audio sync problem was completely gone. why the audio sync problem showed up in sagetv miniclient and not with other players erroneously led me to point at the sagetv miniclient spouse approval factor back at normal levels
