If you're already getting what you want with your current system via the HDPVR, I'd probably just stick with that.

hehe - well, three tuners instead of one for $1.99 instead of $8.50 sounded good, but if WMC and the X-Box have to be involved, then yeah, that's overkill for me

What Kryptonyte was describing is accurate, but kind of an "advanced" setup.
To start with, I'd keep your STB and HDPVR. Then add a Prime with cable card.

To make the Prime work with Sage, you will need to install network tuner software - there are a couple programs, but the best choice right now is Open-DCT. One Prime with one cable card installed will act like 3 of tuners, so you can record up to 3 shows at once.

Sage will only be able to record and playback the channels marked "copy freely" by your cable company - anything else will give an error or say no signal. I don't know Cox's policy on flagging channels. Comcast is really good in this regard - they mark everything except Premiums as Copy Freely. Time Warner is the worst - they only mark the locals as copy freely.

As mentioned by Kryptonyte, the only PC software that can record stuff marked "copy once" is Windows Media Center. Microsoft dropped support for WMC in Windows 10 (though I think if you search the Internet, there may be some hacks you can do to make it work - otherwise you would need to stick with an older version of Windows to make that work). There were extenders for WMC - they are no longer made, but you can get them from eBay, or use an Xbox as an extender. Then it is possible to use Sage to tell WMC to record something and play it back on an extender, and then have Sage capture the output from the extender using an HDPVR or something similar. It's a lot of hoops to jump through, but it's possible.

Connecting two additional NICs for two HD HomeRun Prime Units

I am getting occasional drops. The error messages are:
"Halt detected in recorder, Digital TV Tuner stopped producing data while recording..."

I purchased two 10/100/1000 network adapter cards. Each of my two HD HomeRun Prime units will have their own dedicated network card on my computer. How are the additional network cards configured? I can't use DHCP because the two additional network cards are hooked directly to my HD HomeRun Prime units. Do I need to hook the network cards to the HD HomeRun units with crossover Ethernet cables?

FYI, the beta firmware appears to have completely resolved the drops;

EDIT: link updated

If you decide to go with the network cards, you don't do anything, just a straight Ethernet wire.

It's good to know there is a beta that fixes the occasional dropping problem. I don't know if separate, dedicated network cards will help or not, but I'm willing to try it.

My local IP addresses on my router and switch are 10.0.0.X. I tried installing one extra network card in the computer before installing the second extra network card. My network card shows it is disconnected using a straight Ethernet cable. I set the network card to DHCP, and also tried using 10.1.0.1, and I'm still not seeing any network activity on the card, and the computer says the extra card is disconnected. I must be doing something wrong!
