Yes it is the same hardware but there are a few things that the new version has, including a smaller case. Given the option to buy the original or the latest you would think that most folks would opt for the latest which should lead to lower prices for the original.

It sounds like the original has an SD card slot but the new version does not. In that case, I would opt for the original. Maybe pick up a used one from eBay.
