so a HD200 would wake the Sage server via the plugin? Not sure I understand..

Yes, routerunner's squeezeslave plugin is basically a separate program that gets run on the extender when it is 'off'. When that program quits, to start the sagetv client program, it sends a wake command to the server.

That's right. When STV will be OS it could be nice to have a separate executable just for the WOL feature to include in a firmware update or implement the feature straight into the miniclient, will see whether there will be enough interest...
