Out of curiosity, have to attempted to do any live transcoding with your ffmpeg process to convert the MPEG2 to H.264, instead of a straight stream dump?
I have absolutely been thinking about transcoding in real time! I am probably not going to add this feature for the first beta. I have some ideas for transcoding profiles based on the recording quality settings in sage. Sage passes that value to the Network encoder when it starts the recording.

The issue is, it's the tuner itself that wraps the file/recording in DRM, not the software. The recording software never (to my knowledge) sees or cares about the copy once flag. If it were up to the software to do the DRM wraping, it wouldn't be a very secure system, and we wouldn't have issues with SageTV et al not having CableCard support.

It would be pretty easy for SageTV (or SageDCT) to record copy once content, the issue is the DCT wraps the recording in Playready DRM (Microsoft) before handing it off to the software. The problem then arises with SageTV not having a Playready license.

SageTV LLC actually did at one point, but never used it...

Yeah, I think it might have been more of a philosophical problem than a technical one.

I think the hopes at the time were to have AllVid make their job easier, so they never went anywhere with the CableCard support. Obviously Jeff would know more about what the license was originally for, and what ever came of it. In any case, I doubt an open source project is going to get one.

Thanks for explaining that. I always hoped there would be a digital equivalent to the HD-PVR analog hole like some sort of digital to analog back to digital loopback.

Anyway - I'm excited to hear about the Open Source announcement. Many thanks to Jeff! Also excited to see all of this activity here. I check in every so often.

We use SageTV via a couple of extenders every single day we are at home (a family of 4). Have tried other solutions but SageTV is still by far the best!

That's the HD PVR/Colossus.

Yeah we got one and a cable box. Just don't want to have 3 and 3 cable boxes. Ughhh....

Let's see what comes out of this open source. Maybe a way to get SlingTV to work. I am also an owner of PlayOn and PlayLater. PlayLater is cool but you can't start watching until the recording is over (unlike semi-live TV).

I'm quite happy with my HD-PVR setup but like others mentioned, it does cost me a HD tuner rental. The only thing I'm missing is CC support in those recordings. It's that reason alone I'd love to get Prime working (don't own one yet), but based on what I've read online, it appears my cable provider Cox may be one of the bad ones.

I have something that is ready for testing. If anyone is interested in helping test it can they please send me a PM and I will send them the Network Tuner and instructions.

I would like to get some feedback before I release to everyone.

P.S. Does anyone know if there is documentation on the Network Turner protocol. I had to reverse engineer the protocol from readying other's code. I have some questions I would like to see some documentation on.

Can't help you test because I don't have cable card yet. But I'm definitely in once I DO get setup for it as I have 3 HDHR primes itching to be fully used with more than just QAM.

Would love to help test... if I can risk breaking my setup SageDCT has been pretty much 100% stable for me with cablecard and Comcast. This would be the time since we've been trying without SageTV for the last 2 months and I'm just now getting ready to re-enable recordings (just couldn't take WMC anymore)...

I would like to test it for you. Is it for all tuners or can we select one of the three for yours and two for sagedct. The other thought was I have a spare pc in the basement maybe set one tuner for it and two for my regular server then compare the recordings.

Attached is the only doc file I know of for now.

Will this work with QAM (still HDHomeRun) too, or just CableCard?

That's all i had laying around too. Unfortunately, I think some was added after that as well. Some discovery logic was added, and such, but was only ever implemented in the SageTV software, for finding encoders from other SageTV software. Nothing else was ever made to use it, because I'm not sure the documentation ever included it. I don't know.. the end of the document says to direct all questions to some Jeff guy at "freytechnologies.com". I don't think that's a thing.. :-)

Thanks Andy. Hopefully that will answer some of my questions. If not I will post them here and see if anyone has any ideas.

Just curious, why would you want to use a QAM tunner through a Network Tuner? Is there HDHomeRun tunners that do not work directly in Sage? Anyway, I think it should work. You just need to make sure all of the mappings are correct in the guide.

You can run 1 or many. I think this will technically support as many tuners as your network and SageTV can handle.

LOL... The main reason I asked for the documentation was for the transcoding. Sage sends me the filename, so I can not repackage the stream in another container. I tried stuffing h264 in .mpg container and nothing would play it back. Not even VLC. I was wondering if I could get sage to let me change the container. Possibly to MKV.

Not sure what specific issue you were having, but you SHOULD be able to put h264 in a .mpg container if it is actually m2ts or m2ps just named wrong. I'm pretty sure that's how the r5000HD network encoder's did it, which worked great for me with Dish network's h.264 streams for many years.
