What's interesting is D* (IIRC) actually had (or allowed, not sure which) Adaptec to make a card for recieving D* on a PC, but then killed it before it made it to market.

I think that was the Adaptec Satellite Express. IIRC it wasn't a tuner per se but allowed some sort of data casting or push if you will of extra content on NDS systems (not just D*). That was before most people had access to broadband and the idea was that when you accessed your PC all this pre-ordered content would already be sitting there delivered via satellite. I think it was at COMDEX 97 or 98 in there somewhere but like you I don't think they were ever released. Not so much because D* killed it but because they never got the content idea sold but I could be dead wrong about that.

There was a screen saver that worked like that (push content in the background) that was supposed to be the coolest product since the web browser but it sort of fizzled too. I just can't think of the name of it for some reason. Actually I know the reason but I'm not tellin.

peace . . .

Hey folks,

Well just to add my stick to the fire. I love my PVR and Sage setup, and have no problems jumping on the HD bandwagon adding to it. As well I wouldn’t mind too much building a 2nd PVR for HD. Thus I've taken the dive head first and ordered the HD-3000. Yes yes, I know, Linux only, and OTA. Well from what I've been reading (very little so far) it seems to be the best pre-July choice, with the largest active community. I am highly interested in anyone comments on this card, as well its competition. I live in the Dallas Texas area, and from what I can tell have a nice HD broadcast selection for OTA. I would also be very interested in hearing about other options beyond OTA as well good resources for more info. Seeing how July is nearing, I really doubt to see any SageTV HD support. Thus from what I can tell, my/our only hope is the lawsuit against the FCC will delay if not do away with the broadcast flag requirements. As for Windows MCE, I have zero interest due to it being riddled with DRM.

Thanks,
RedR

FWIW, as I posted in another thread (I'll repeat it here for those who missed). My best guess (based on the fact that I assume Frey wants to remain in business, and HD is the future) is that Frey is trying to work out (or hope fully finalize) a DRM system that will allow Sage to be BS <make that BF> and hopefully CableCard compatible.

[CONSPIRACY THEORY CAP ON]
Actually (and this just occured to me) the timing for such a thing is almost perfect. 3.0 is coming the next few months and a beta/release of a BS/Cablecard complaint 3.0 would coincide almost perfectly with the 7/5 BS activation.[/CONSPIRACY THEORY CAP OFF]

I picked up a pair of the HD-3000 cards too. I'm not sure how I'm going to get them integrated into a sage system yet, maybe sage recorder will someday be available for linux.

I believe the first compliant PC will be running Longhorn, so I'm not holding my breath.
