What are you scanning -- just SageTV recordings? If so, how many do you have? It will hit your webserver once for each item IIRC. It's also possible Plex has stalled on a problem item, the Plex plugin logs will let you know the last time it tried to scan/identify an item.

In any case, it might be better to post these sorts of questions/issues in the Plex/BMT Scanner thread.

Yeah, that will take a while. I don't think it's slow, you just have a lot of stuff It's also going to spend some time pulling in cover art, etc.

So should I expect a refresh to take hours? The actual scan seemed like it took
a short time
from the Plex Media Scanner.log

But the circle was still spinning on the webpage and I saw some plex process taking up some CPU (I don't remember what process it was but not the transcoder)

Hard to say exactly -- is everything showing up in your sections?

Also, as I said: It's also going to spend some time pulling in cover art, etc.

I'll have to look into it later. I wish I know how far along it was. I had the original scan going for a day or two before I stopped it. The just scan started again (on its own - I thought I had it set to once a day) and was hogging resources so I just stopped the whole media server until I have time to look into this again! Ugh! I Did notice that none of my movies showed up.. It seems like just TV shows did... Unless it didn't even get to the drive that has the movies.

at least I now know where the logs are and maybe can make sense of them..

You might want to try this since you may have gotten Plex in a not very good state (I managed to corrupt the database a few times when I was trying it out originally):

Remove all your sections. Then add one section at a time (e.g. SageTV recordings as TV shows) and let that one scan through before adding more sections.

When adding sections of video files (non-recordings), maybe add one folder at a time to each section (e.g. I have two top-level folders for tv shows, and only one top-level folder for movies. I would add just one of the two folders to the TV section, wait for that to complete, then add a second folder to that same TV section, and wait for that to complete, etc).

Note that once everything has been completely scanned successfully, subsequent re-scans for new items should be very very quick.

I'll try that... I have 3 folders for my TV shows.. I'll try one at a time..

I'll keep my finger crossed.

oh.. and does plex have any issues with a UNC path? one of my folders is on my NAS.. So I did a \\tower\TV for one of my folders...

Okay, so I had not understood was Plex was for a long time (and I've been busy ) and just read this thread because it specifically mentioned Android streaming. So rather than bog down the Sage plugin thread with total noob questions, I'll ask here:
1) If you add the SageTV recordings folder(s) to your Plex, why wouldn't the recordings work through Plex? Does this have to do with file types (I'm OTA-only and all my recordings are in MPEG-2)?

1a) There seem to be mixed signals above about whether the Plex scanner plugin is needed in order to stream Sage recordings via Plex. From what I read (briefly), it looks like all the Plex plugin does is get the metadata set up so that it all works "pretty" in Plex. Is there more to it? In other words, if I don't care about metadata in Plex and just want to be able to stream recordings (even if the name is Sage's ugly native file name), could I?

2) What kind of processor/RAM hog is Plex when it's sitting idle and when it's streaming to a remote device? My Sage server (specs in sig below) is running SageTV service, PlayOn, YAC, Google Play Music server, and Splashtop already (though Splashtop is mainly for streaming reasons and I could uninstall that if Plex works). Concerns?

TIA.

You can add the libraries with no problem most of the TV Shows will work... as long as they have the season and episode in the file ... which SageTV adds. The movies are a different story. Everything will show up you just might be missing some metadata (Which you said is no big deal)

I do not use the Plex Sagetv Scanner at all as my files follow the Plex naming convention. The overhead in plex is minimal... My server is an I3 quad core and I see little to no impact. Running SageDCT comskip handbrake all at the same time.

AS A matter of fact If I can figure out a way to mark shows watched in Plex as watched in SageTV... I would completely move over to plex clients.

The Sage scanner and metadata thing (mostly) just work. You don't need to use the pretty file naming conventions if you use the sage scanner (from what I understand) The scanner and BMT plugin are really easy to setup. You just have to drop it in the right folder and modify like two files and you are all set.. But that assumes you already have jetty installed.. If you have to configure jetty then it might be more involved. I guess you could just try it with the normal scanner. It might take longer as it tries to extract season info from the cryptic title.. As for the first part. Someone else will have to chime in. I've only tried to stream a couple files and they all seemed to work. But certainly not an exhaustive sample.

I have a core2duo (is that what it was called) and it struggled to transcode while the media scanner was still going. So there are some CPU issues. It might be time to upgrade my server to something beefier! I've yet to try with say 5 recordings going on with a comskip to see how it fairs.. My guess is it won't be too happy..
Now if I could just fix my scanning not stopping!

Thanks for the answers. A little clarification and further questions:

1) Does Plex need season/episode? Does it NEED to know if something's a movie or TV recording? Or can it just show a file as a "media file" and allow you to stream it?

2) All I'd be using Plex for is streaming to Android devices. Not concerned about UI or using Plex as a client on a monitor/TV in my house or anywhere I'd want a slick UI experience. All I really want to know is, if I'm out somewhere and want to watch a show that I'd recorded with Sage, could I? Currently I can stream with my iPod Touch via mobile webserver, but my phone is Android and I'm about to get an Android tablet.

3) A reference was made above to ability to stream "movies"... that is kinda broad and I am not worried about things being classified as "movie" or not. I just want to know if I could stream what I have. I have: recorded TV (MPEG-2 from HDHR), ripped DVDs (native .TS folder structure), and then random saved youtube clips of kids stuff for my daughter (youtube stuff is mostly .flv, I believe, maybe some .mp4). Would I be able to watch all of that? Some of that?

4) What kind of on-the-fly transcoding does Plex do? Surely that has to burden your processor?

5) What spec do you need on your Android device to see it? The app store says "requires Android 1.6 and up". But that can be deceiving, I have 2.2 on my phone and I've had apps that claim to need "2.2 or newer" tell me they are not compatible with my device. I guess I find it hard to believe that something which can stream video like this (clearly not easy to do since so few apps do it) really works with an OS as old as 1.6. So, for instance, do you need flash or flash-capability? Does the Plex app have what you need built in in terms of video processing and codecs (does it read and play anything that the Plex server sends, or, does the server transcode to what you need it to be)? My Android phone does not have flash and I don't know whether the tablet I get will or won't. Is there any way to ensure that anything I stream from Plex will indeed be able to play on my device(s)?

I, personally, have had little to no luck getting the sage plugin scanner to work reliably. I have not spent too much time digging into it yet, but it would work for a small folder of movies, but if pointed at my recordings folders, it would crap out at some point, and result in nothing in that plex section.

It depends on which scanner/agent you select in Plex when add a folder. If you use the series scanner with thetvdb then the filenames must follow the usual season/episode conventions. If you select the BMT agent, then Plex will query your SageTV webserver via BMT and get the metadata that way. This assumes that you have the webserver and BMT in place.

Plex does remote streaming. Having said that, the quality of the stream will depend on the source file, if it needs to be transcoded or not, and if so, the power of the computer that the Plex server is installed on, and of course, the quality of your wireless/cell connection.

See above. I have never found a service that could reliably stream 1080i recordings (interlacing is a pain, apparently).

Yes, of course it's a burden, but then so is any on-the-fly transcoding. If you pre-transcode files to be in a compatible format for the target device, then no transcoding has to occur.

If you don't get the answers you need to these specific questions, you might want to ask in the Plex forums. I have iOS devices and zero experience with Android. There are plenty of folks in the Plex forums that do, however, and I'm sure they'd be happy to help.

Also, the Plex server is free and the app is $5 (or less these days) so it's relatively low-risk to just try it out.

I wonder if it's just a particular file that it's crapping out on and not necessarily the number of files in the recordings folder?

Here's the Android FAQ from the Plex wiki:

Maybe that will answer some of your questions as well.
