Eric Schmidt just said that Google Fiber is a business and will expand beyond KC and they are trying to figure out where to go next. But given the current pace it may not be rolled out across the US until the 22nd century.

That's one hell of a coincidence, since there's a ton of sound checking going on at Madison Square Garden tonight during the live Sandy Relief concert. Living through Sandy myself (somehow, some way, practically unscathed), seeing these folks come together to help out is pure joy, especially when most of the country/world thinks everything is back to normal, yet it's anything but. Sorry for the little soapbox there, but this is a very personal issue.

Does Google Fiber include a WiFi access point as part of the supplied equipment?

I wonder because I've noticed that most consumer grade routers have very limited throughput from the WAN side to the LAN side. So even though you buy a "gigabit" router with the latest 802.11n (or ac) that's supposed to support 300+ Mbps, the link from your LAN to the WAN is often limited to between 25 and 100Mbps.

So, if Google gives you this great 1000 Mbps connection and you add a "slow" WiFi router, you will be adding a huge bottleneck and won't see much advantage over typical cable internet.

I'm thinking google fiber's router is built into the 'modem' - called their 'network box' (which really isn't a modem - it's just a fiber transceiver and router).

It does. I believe the network box is a router and then each TV box also acts as an access point.

For those wondering what Jeff (Narflex) is up to these days, I imagine it includes addressing things like this:

“Fiber Internet is great. TV service stinks.” “Buggy skips in watching TV.”

This one (I believe from the forums) kind of surprises me. I don't believe it is the norm and I wonder if it is someone watching on a wifi-connected box.

Reviews of the TV packages suggest something mildly more problematic. The picture can freeze. On rare channels at rare times, the audio and video seem slightly out of sync. Even people who report such glitches don’t seem much annoyed.

“It’s buggy,” said Gabriel Rowe, a corporate consultant. “At the top of the hour, it will hiccup.”

He’s also puzzled at the way channels line up. On AT&T’s U-verse, his previous TV provider, all the children’s channels are grouped together. With Google Fiber, he said, a kid might be more likely to flip from Nickelodeon to more PG-13-grade programming.

Google’s numbering of channels does differ from the industry standards. High-definition channels are the low numbers rather than those above 1000. And the system is designed more for searching — Google, is after all, about using keywords — than surfing.

And sometimes what appears like a glitch is there by design. For instance, the TV system has an anti-spoiler feature. If a show is being recorded — or somebody started watching it earlier in another room — anybody who turns to that channel while the program is in progress is automatically taken to its start. Some customers find it annoying. Google said it might further customize the feature.

There’s also broad consensus that streaming Netflix becomes much smoother in a Google Fiber world. The boosted Internet speeds make buffering extinct, and the TV package makes finding a Netflix movie or show simple.

I see lots of things I'm used to with SageTV such as the "on the hour hiccup". I imagine taking something like SageTV which was used to dealing with a moderately to highly geeky consumer group to a more broad-based-population even on a small scale is quite a challenge for Jeff and the team.
