I get this on my Box too and I'm not sure how to fix it. I have a workaround for my development environment but it won't work if you install the app in the normal way, you'd have to run it as a test app.

Boxee for PC/Mac/Ubuntu dies on Jan 31

I am surprised that no one has posted this yet:

We believe the future of TV will be driven by devices such as the Boxee Box, Connected TVs / Blu-Rays and 2nd screen devices such as tablets and phones. While there are still many users who have computers connected to their TVs, we believe this use case is likely to decline as users find better alternatives. People will continue to watch a lot of video on their computer, but it is more likely to be a laptop than a home-theater PC and probably through a browser rather than downloaded software.

To our computer users… to those who have come out to our NYC and SF meetups, talked with us at Engadget, GDGT, and Giz Gallery events, or enjoyed Austin BBQ with us during SxSW, or simply messaged with us on Facebook, Twitter, and our forums… thank you for all your support – we would not be where we are today without you. But we can’t stay here.

We are excited about the upcoming release of Boxee Live TV and our new product roadmap for 2012. If you are a current Boxee user on a computer we hope that you will enjoy 1.5 and maybe when you are ready to retire that good ol’ HTPC/Mac Mini you will decide to get a Boxee Box.
Does this have negative ramifications for the Sage/Boxee project?

I've always assumed that the main target was the Boxee Box and not the PC clients.

At this point however the project is on hold. It was intended to be a proof-of-concept and I think we've done that and a little more. The software is usable as it is but needs more love to make it a full fledged Sage extender.

It's all open sourced so if anybody wants to contribute they can. I am not planning to spend more time on it in the near future.

The box was the main target but having the ability to also work on clients was useful and it seems like most of the people trying it out (like me) were using PCs.

I'm curious why the project is on hold. Is there something else you (or others) are working on, or is it just too time consuming now?

I've used the Boxee software on a PC and it's definitely 'good enough'. But for now I've got enough clients (hd100, hd300 and 2 client licenses) that I really haven't worried about it too much.

I know for me, At first i got extremely busy with everything else going on in life, and could no longer devote the dev time to the project. I slowly phased myself out so that i wouldn't be holding the project up.

Aside from that, I think that the boxee app is AWESOME and Tom did a great job at pulling all the pieces together.

Personally i don't like how limiting the boxee platform is. Thats why, now that i have some free time (sort of), i have focused my recreational dev time elsewhere (plex and xbmc)...(eventhough i haven't been able to spend any time on the agent scripting i was doing because of the holidays, work and just flat out being to darn busy :-/ )

How does it go? Necessity drives innovation. When it's truly needed, it'll be picked back up, I'm sure.

I was never really a full contributor to the project. I did some initial python API wrapper work and offered assistance when I could, but that's it. As it stands, I don't need this solution - I have HD100s, 200s, and 300s and they're all working at this time. When they die and I need something else then I'll really start taking a close look at Boxee, Plex, XBMC, etc. And which ever one I choose, I'm sure I'll then start making code changes to it. But until I need it, I probably won't look at it too closely.

I do casually research alternatives given the current state of Sage. Boxee, Plex, XBMC, etc. Boxee is in the lead, barely, and that's only because there is a decently working Sage "mini-client" already written. In case of disaster, this is where I'd turn my attention. I have to say I like where Plex is going, but a little unclear about extender hardware for the platform.

Anyway, the point being there are options, some more developed than others, and when someone with the skills to continue development truly needs one of these solutions then that's when you'll see development pick up and resume on these platforms.

Various reasons:
- It's very time consuming to develop for the Boxee Box.
- The Boxee Box is still going through teething pains.
- I don't really need it right now since I have enough clients. (Selfish I know.)
- I think the user interest is low (maybe medium).
- I'm working on other Sagey things.

So, much like Slugger did some experiments with alternate EPG sources just to make sure we didn't get caught with our pants down, a group of us did the Boxee client as an experiment to make sure we didn't get caught off guard.

Has anyone tried the new Boxee software version 1.5 with the SageTV for Boxee app yet? Will SageTV for Boxee continue to work after upgrading to Boxee 1.5? Are there compelling reasons to move to Boxee 1.5 (e.g. do the channel icons work with the new version?)

All,
Sorry about that I suppose I should clarify my statement.

Since there is no longer a replacement for a HD-200, 300 will we ever have a viable solution to replace said Manufactured Product???? I just don't see it in the cards.

Long Live SageTv

Version 1.5 is apparently the last version of the Boxee PC Client. This is pretty disappointing. They are going to focus on the Boxee Box only going forward.

I did not try to test with Boxee 1.5 after reading the end of support for the PC client.

Honestly, you'd probably better off looking at Plex Server (+ SageTV scanning/metadata agent plugins) + Roku.

This won't give you front-end Sage capability (e.g. guide, schedule recordings, manage favorites, etc) but will get you a pretty good to excellent playback client.

Doesn't playback on the Roku devices require transcoding? If so that can hardly qualify in the good to excellent range.

First, personally I think the Roku is also WAY overpriced, as it can't even play back MPEG2 encoding.

Second problem is with the Plex server, as it uses the "User" directory on Windows. A well designed SageTV server will have a small system disk, and the Plex server will fill it quickly. If they would allow you to move the data area, this wouldn't be too bad of a server system. (I think is about the most common request in the Windows Server area of the Plex Forums, and seems to be ignored by the developers.) BTW, this is one thing I wish SageTV would have fixed before closing shop, is make all "directories" in the properties file to paths, so you could store any parts anywhere on your system, but it doesn't store 1/1000000 of the data Plex does!

Way overpriced - compared to what? It starts at $50 - which is what you would pay for two USB cables at Best Buy.
