I am on WHS2011 as well, and firewall is on, and I did not (to the best of my recollection) have to add any firewall exceptions for SageDCT or HDHR software to work.

Thanks for the info. I ended up rolling back to sageDCT 2.18 which I had running before my WHS v1 hard drive went south. With this version I can have the firewall on with the appropriate ports in udp open.

I know it should not make any difference, but during the testing with 2.2 DCT one of the tuners would constantly fail under the test tab. On 2.18 everything worked and responded as expected.

Time will tell. WAF is dropping fast though!! lol

Talking Fixed Next Day and Working Better Now

After the HDHR and HDHR prime firmware upgrades, I started to get halts with the primes. The primes became a major source of annoyance since they were once rock solid and now would fail at almost every recording.

I had recently gotten rid of an HD-PVR from my system setup and figured it's configuration might be causing issues.

Once Silicondust came back (it went down during the initial firmware upgrade), I downloaded the latest beta firmwares from silicondust for the HDHR and HDHR3-CC.

Uninstalled the primes from the sources with Sage. Shutdown Sage normally including HDHR and SageDCT services. Applied beta firmwares to the HDHR and HDHR3-CC. Opened SageDCT and mirrored the settings found @ babgvant.com. Generated and overwrote the sageDCT tuner info (for copy and pasting into sage.properties). Opened sage.properties and pasted over the previous HDHR3 info. Removed all HD-PVR mmc information. Saved sage.properties file. Restarted sagetv including SageDCT and HDHR services. Setup HDHR3-CC video sources. Tested without issue. Strangely my system seems to be working better and faster now.

Is it XP that's a problem here?

I'm starting to think Prime/SageDCT is more workable under Windows 7 and using XP may be a losing game for rock solid performance.

Has anyone here been using the Prime/SageDCT with 90% or better results in XP?

Thank you, john

Kirby,

I'm using an N40L w/ WHS 2011 and SageDCT to record from my HDHomeRun Prime. But I'm getting a ton of halts. I've read through the thread, and I have an intel NIC on the way to try it out, but did you do anything extra to make yours work? Thanks!

Firewall off -- problems. On but allowing all communications -- working.
I don't understand what this means. How do you set the firewall up to allow all communication? Do you delete all the current rules and then set one rule that allows everything both ways?

Nope, still using the built in ethernet port. Dont recall making any changes other than to make sure the 'get media info from internet' option was turned off. I've got HD Prime 3cc, and a HDHR, and HD-PVR which have all recorded at same time while viewing another recording. Havent had any network congestion on it. I am running 8GB of ram though.

Not sure if it matters, but I am using the WHS version of Sage on my N40L. Obviously it doesnt have the add-in support, but got the extra placeshifter license. Oh and Java 1.6.26.

Had a "Recording Missed Due To Capture Device Failure" error last night. Oddly enough it mirrors an exact same failure from last week: same show, Talking Dead, same channel, AMCHD.

Nothing else was recording on that particular tuner prior to this one starting up. Haven't had any other failures in the past week and have probably recorded over a dozen shows on the Prime since the last failure. Another show was starting up at the same time on another tuner.

Posting this in case Andy can see anything in it.

Lots of halts

I too have been getting lots of halts and I've isolated it to the hdhr prime. Check the log file on your prime for either watchdog reset or resource errors. When errors happen hdhr device web page becomes inacessible and hdhrs disappear from win7 network window. Also, silicon dust quicktv app will program freeze if watching on pc. Problems are happening at least 1x per hour for me. Duration can be 2-3 min. or sometimes have to change channel. Running latest beta software 20120224 on two primes and also have two atsc hdhrs with no problems.

SageDCT halts.

I was getting halts doing the recording of Fox & Friends on FNC, about two hours in. Since these were always happening on tuner 1 I decided to uninstall that tuner and try that recording using WMC. The recording gets flaky in about the same place as SageDCT, but I don't actually get any "halts." It just keeps recording and the quality eventually comes back, or I just don't know how to determine halts in WMC. Anyway, I figure I'll try one of the other tuners and see if that's any different. Now the default on SageDCT will be either 0 or 2 since 1 isn't available.

I've also ordered an Intel NIC just in case that's the problem. But it looks like the tuner has problems after it reaches a certain temp, and then comes back when the temp gets higher. Weird.

Interesting observation. Did you mean to say it comes back when the temp gets *lower*?

If so, I'm going to try a cooling fan on the Prime because mine tends to fail when multiple recordings are taking place. I don't mind blowing the warranty. I've tried most everything else (including the Intel NIC) outside of upgrading from XP to Windows 7.

Well, since it goes away and then comes back periodically it might be heating up and cooling down. But it could be anything in the system, not just the tuner. I don't think a fan would void the warranty. It might also be a combination of things, including a weak signal. That particular channel does come in a little weak, but why would it always fail at the same time in the program? Maybe there's a surge of other activity around 7:30 to 8:00 AM and that has something to do with it? I'm going to try a few other things too.

Noticed one oops today. One of my Prime tuner ports had an XP firewall setting of TCP rather than UDP for the exception. No wonder I was getting device failures on that tuner.

I didn't realize the Prime was filled with vent holes, unlike the HDHR. I put a full size fan on it last night and ran a multi-tuner test recoding 4 half-hour back to back programs on all of its tuners.

It failed as typical under a full load with gaps in 4 or 5 recordings. Over heating doesn't appear to be an issue with my setup.

Does anyone know if you can assign a certain favorite to an individual tuner, or exclude one tuner, in SageDCT or SageTV? I can probably trick it into not using the default tuner by assigning a 5 minute recording that overlaps the start of the program. Since Tuner 1 is the default (or seems to be) it'll have to use 0 or 2, but it's sort of inelegant. I suspect that tuner 1 is the one that has a problem on shows longer than 90 minutes.

I also got an Intel CT PCIexpress ethernet adapter so perhaps that'll help.

After weeks of tuning/experimenting with the HdHomeRun Prime under XP (SP3, 32bit), I've never been able to record over 10 shows without at least one "incident". (Halt/Gap/total tuner failure). These issues generally occurred on back-to-back recordings or during multiple recordings at once.

Over the weekend I downloaded Windows 8 preview 64-bit, SageDCT 64-bit, SageTV (using my old Wiz.bin), installed the Prime, plus a standard HDHomerun and have recorded dozens of shows without a single hiccup on the same setup. I'm running a first generation I3 with 4GB ram. In fact, it's worked so well, I've turned off the Commercial Detector's "play nice" parameter (which was necessary for me under XP), and allow for 2 detection jobs at once without issue -- even during subsequent recordings.

Needless to say, I won't be using XP again for my SageTV server.

Thanks for all the suggestions and comments.

Red face Windows 7/8 Firewall For SageDCT

You could, but Windows 7 would just recreate the rules except for the ones that it is does not control (not directly protected or created by Windows 7).

I do not recommend that. Check the rules of the active profile.

Less secure, but effective:
For inbound and outbound connections, make sure all connections are green (allowed). If you see any gray ones, those are currently blocked. Change them to green.

If you want to do a more controlled "hunt" for the correct firewall connection(s), that is up to you but it is a more secure way to go.

If you can do a send test in SageDCT, you are probably okay. If you get a message that something is blocked, then either the SageDCT service is down or the firewall is blocking the communication.

I wish someone had the exact port list for everything Sage and SageDCT use, but I have not seen it posted. That would be an awesome sticky.

I had a couple of quick questions. I am using SageDCT with HDHR Prime (3 tuner), I have noticed that when I capture SD content that flesh tones have this bluish tint to them. I haven't had any issues like this when capturing HD content. I am running 2.1.8 32 bit on Windows 7 x64. So first question here, has anyone seen anything similar? Second question if I want to update my version of SageDCT, what is involved? Any suggestions / advice would be welcomed. Thanks in advance.

I've never seen a "bluish tint" on any recordings coming from Prime - even on SD recordings.

I've updated my SageDCT to a newer version, but I think I did that on an older version of the properties file that didn't have the SageDCT encoders listed in it from the earlier version of SageDCT.

You could save the properties file as a backup, load the new SageDCT, go through its install and see if the new data for the Properties file looks like what's already in there. If not, delete out all the old information related to SageDCT and insert the new.

BTW: Make sure the SageDCT service is stopped before installing the new version of SageDCT.
