Well, the main server board has 5 slots on it, so I can't reasonably go beyond that. Even so, current motherboards go for around $70, but I'd also have to shell out for a processor, RAM and cooling. All of which would likely add up to about $200. Add on the cost of the dual-tuner cards (which I would forego, because I'd likely just use HD-PVRs in the future) and the cost of the additional power usage of the server. The second machine is an old, small-footprint P4-based box that uses $1.80 per month in electricity, and sits in a cool basement, so it does not add to cooling costs.

So, in my case, consolidation would not yield any real savings, or add increased functionality. I think I'd be better served spending another $380 on a pair of HD-DVRs after the Colossus issues get worked out ...
