This sounds more like a floating ground inside the box. Perhaps it is a mis-assembled unit and the PCB is not grounded or not electrically connected to the case so that any static is causing the processor to either barf or just reset. The wall wart is essentially an isolation transformer, so if the center is hot (which it must be or the unit would not work ever), then its power source should not matter. The issue is in the HD box itself, not the wall. Plus there are several here with the same problem; hard to believe this many miswired outlets, but the HD is in common to all.
