What decoders are being used for h.264 videos?

As part of looking into adding an h.264 video decoder configuration option to the SageTV UI, what h.264 decoders are people currently using?

So far, these decoder options are known:
  • ArcSoft Video Decoder
  • CyberLink H.264/AVC Decoder (PDVD8)
  • CyberLink H.264/AVC Decoder (PDVD7)
  • CyberLink H.264/AVC Decoder (HD264)
  • CyberLink H.264/AVC Decoder(ATI)
  • CoreAVC Video Decoder
  • CyberLink H.264/AVC Decoder (PDVD7.x)

If anyone is using a different h.264 video decoder setting for the videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter property, please post the exact property value you are using here.

Thanks.

Decoder names submitted to SageTV:
  • CyberLink H.264/AVC Decoder (PCM45)
  • DivX H.264 Decoder
  • ffdshow Video Decoder

Thanks for the replies so far.

One question, though. Is the 2nd of these the exact property value? Or, are they 2 different settings? (We would need to know the exact setting being used.)

DivX H.264 Decoder is what I got from DirectX Filter Manager. I double check once I'm back home.

The Arcsoft decoders do not register as Directshow filters any longer. So I guess they can't be used with Sage - no matter what you specify in the properties file.

I had to install a old version of the MT first to make it work.

There's also no DirectShow support for the AVC & VC1 codecs in PDVD8 Build 2521 Ultra and PDVD9 Build 1501 Ultra.

Current I'm using:
CyberLink H.264/AVC Decoder (PDVD7.x)

Ver 7.3 that came with my LG Blu-ray drive. Seems I can make DXVA work with it vice 8. Using Haali ahead of it.

I don't have a DivX H264 Decoder Filter
but DirectX Filter Manager shows on my system
DivX Decoder Filter
as the name.

I use ffdshow video decoder. It used to be pretty slow, but is pretty much as quick as CoreAVC when you use the mt option in the installer on recent builds.

DivX Decoder Filter is strictly for pure Divx files. DivX H264 Decoder Filter is for h.264 filkes only. They are two seperate decoders. (And two seperate installations I think.)

Just a reminder: in order for me to tell SageTV about a decoder, I need to know the exact property setting that is actually being used to play h.264 files by the person creating the post; if the decoder is unclear to me in a post, then I won't send it in because we may not have it to test & verify.

And, please only let me know about a decoder that isn't already listed in the first post of this topic.

Thanks.

Edit: who is using "DivX H.264 Decoder" and/or "DivX H264 Decoder Filter" as the property setting in SageTV? I saw the post about "DivX H.264 Decoder" being shown in the DirectShow Filter Manager... is that what is being used in SageTV? Are these two different valid filter names?

What about the H.264 decoders that are "built-in" to Windows 7? Should we start thinking about those? I'm not quite sure of what exactly they are called, but it would be good to eventually support those (in a similar way the built in MS Vista Decoders are supported).

If you've got a setting that plays h.264 files in SageTV, other than what is listed in the first post, post the info.

Andy, are you asking us to post the videoframe line from our properties file if it is different than those you've listed?

For Example:
Code:
videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter=ArcSoft Video Decoder

Yes, I'm basically asking for that property's value. (It is in the first post, but I'll bold it to make it stand out.)

Yea, I noticed the last update to 8 Ultra had the H.264 decoder dissapear. I had to roll back to the previous update.

You'd think that they would be happy that people are buying their product in order to use their DirectX filters.

The valid filter name to be used in SageTV is DivX H.264 Decoder. (this is the only valid filter name for it.)

Although I am not currently using this I had been testing it all thru their beta phase. (When it was a seperate install.) I was mistaken in my post above and it is installed with version 7.0 and above of the DivX Player.
