Great thinking but I have SageTV on 1 system running in service mode. I am running the latest 6.5.8 with the latest HDHR drivers/firmware (and currently only have 1 HDHR). The computer and switch are both gigabit ethernet.

Problem might be solved although I'm not sure what the resolution was I do know that I might have been wrong about what the problem was!

On further diagnosis I found that after a period of watching the show that was recording when I pressed a button on the remote I got the spinning circle. When I was able to alt-tab out I found my RAM was maxed!

I think i have all the issues resolved but will not know until later tonight when HD shows come on again (midday shows are SD for the most part).

Things I have done:
Increased JVM Heap to 1024 (I have 4 gigs of ram)
Disabled system restore on C:
Disabled PageFile (might re-enable and move it to a dedicated USB drive I have)
Disabled FSE (not sure why but figured I'd try it).

BONEHEAD ALERT! I also disabled Kaspersky AV scanning of my recording HDD (cant believe I overlooked it before!)

If I have no problems tonight I'll re-enable FSE and might setup the pagefile on the usb drive.

After beating on the system a little more I am fairly confident that the combination of disableing AV on the recording drive and increasing the JVM Heap to 1024 is the combo that resolved my issue. After a short while of recording 2 shows my Heap size quickly inflated to 84MB/112MB, I could only imagine how large that could have gotten after 45 minutes of recording/watching a couple shows. This also definitely explains the GUI slowdown and freezing too.

I'll let you all know more after primetime tonight.

Thank you again for your help and any suggestions you have are always welcomed!

Ian.

I have a question: does Sage record the "high water mark" on the JVM heap size? Meaning, after I have watched some shows, recorded some shows (all with stuttering), and I go back to the Settings screen, is the JVM sizes the largest that they were? Or are they the sizes they are currently?

If the latter, how can I tell what the JVM size is at any given time? I still have stuttering on the 2250 card as well as the HD-PVR box, but I have not increased the JVM size as Sage has not shown a need (based on the Settings screen.

It shows both (Setup -> Help -> System Information). Under JVM Heap Size there are three numbers (and it tells you what those numbers are), Used (currently in use), Total (how high it has gotten), Max (the most it is ever allowed to use).

Good News. Wife and I just watched a couple hours of TV with limited issues. I did not experience any lockups! The one issue I did have was at the end of a recording I had about 2-3 seconds of audio/video stuttering. This was during only a single recording (while watching timeshifted back 20 minutes) ending and another recording beginning.

Is there a way to resolve this with just 1 drive or will I have to go to either a 2 recording drive or a Raid 0 configuration?

If you can solve that, I'd like to know since I suffer from it too. I have seen a command line optino in sage.properties to the effect of "fast_file_switching" you could check that and set it to true and see what happens.
