it's temporary in 2-3 years you will have same problem with wireless N, like you have today with Wireless G.

I have been using wireless G for 2 of my 5 V1 Windows Media Center extenders for about two years with very few problems. But I don't think it would be as reliable for HD.

I remember reading that the extender is going to be back in store in December. Is that still the expectation?

I have had a search setup on ebay for "sagetv" for about a year now. All it usually finds is tv cards, but today it picked up an HD extender, which apparently sold as soon as it was listed. Not mine, and I wouldn't have bid on it, so hopefully I'm not breaking the rules here. My point is, maybe they've been around long enough that people are moving on, so if you;re in the market and don't want to wait, might be worth doing a saved search. Plus right now you can get 25% off a buy-it-now if you get to ebay through live.com.

just fyi

What's the hold up?

Disclaimer - I am impatient.

The above info was posted on 10/28 - here we are 3 weeks later and no news. What gives? If they're trying to make it in time for holiday sales, they probably want to announce before 'black friday', right? I'd certainly like to put it on my Xmas list.

I can think of a few reasons to hold back info on the next-gen STB:
  1. Cannibalization - users won't buy an existing product if they know it will soon be replaced/obsoleted
  2. Alerting competitors - the sooner they know of your plans the sooner they can react/copy
  3. Setting customer expectations - talking about features before they are complete/released is a gamble it usually makes R&D unhappy

In this case #1 isn't an issue - the HD-100's are sold out (or so I've read). Perhaps they wish to announce a SageTV version bump in conjunction with the new STB, which could cannibalize SageTV SW sales?

I don't think #2 would be an issue - people are pretty clear on how the HD-100 can be improved, and most of the features requested exist in other STB products. I suppose it is possible that Sage will release a completely new feature to the market that other STB vendors will rush to copy/compete with - we'll see.

For Sage & a new STB I think #3 is it. However, if Sage plans to sell units in December, then the hardware must be finished (I hope so for the sake of their engineers). This will dictate some of the features. That leaves the software/firmware - no small task considering that there is likely work to do on the SageTV side to support a new STB. Perhaps they are banking on a specific new system-wide feature that is still in work?

Again, I'm impatient, I'd love to buy a new extender for Xmas. And pre-announcing the next-gen STB practically invites speculation. Anyone else have wild theories about features or why Sage hasn't released more details on the next-gen STB?

-HS

I think the last thing said officially was that they expected to have them available sometime in December.

I would speculate that the SageTV folks are waiting for them to arrive from that boat from China. And once they are in house and ready to ship they'll share more about the product. No sense in saying too much until they know what and when they can deliver...

Sage holds this info close to the vest. Always did and probably always will. Just search the forums. Looks at the lengths of the threads of people pleading for info. Don't think when Opus annouced that little tidbit that they didn't already have that info. You're probably not going to get any info until they arrive or just before. Because no matter what you are or aren't told everyione will want to be first in line to order one. Based on that fact alone that don't have to tell no one nuttin. (Except when they're for sale.) What are you going to do-get mad and not buy one?

Not at all. That post was written with positive eager anticipation - a new HD extender is exciting. In fact, I'm helping to promote their new product by keeping this thread alive .

I'd just rather speculate on features and dates of the product than talk about shipping methods and such.

OK, I'll help...since I've already been spammed several times today.

Will they be coming out with a DX2 overdrive chip for the current extenders?
