We were warned, but I must say I'm finding this new extender quite underwhelming. There aren't any good pictures of it yet, but the initial set makes the HD100 look good. I was really hoping for some sort of collaboration with the Popcorn Hour guys, but that apparently didn't happen. But maybe Sage figures the HD200, with the ability to function without a SageTV server, will have more widespread appeal, allowing them to purchase a bunch more units without being scared of being left with a 1/2 batch of unsold extenders.

I'm a little confused why this is a new model though. It seems like the HD100 has the hardware necessary to do everything the HD200 can do. I would guess it would have only taken a software update. There's speculation that it uses a newer Sigma Designs chip, but even if that were true you'd think they could have kept the old form factor. Maybe not everybody agrees the HD100 looks better though.

Good point. So I'm wondering if a firmware update will allow the old HD100 to have the same features as the HD200?

That would be sweet!

Going by the pictures I have to agree, the HD100 has better aesthetics than the HD200.
I will have to check it out further.

Any word on if the new extender can do true online video/audio from places such as hulu, netflix, or pandora?

"Its the fastest Extender yet" (paraphrased)

This implies an upgraded chip, perhaps the 8630 series. Anyways, aesthetics aside, its the same price with improved functionality:

-Smaller form factor
-functional USB ports
-server free functionality
-the afore-suggested performance increase

My guess is all h.264 1080p issues are resolved with this extender.

I ordered one.

I was hoping it would decode DTS this time. The fact it doesn't makes me think it might just be a slight rehash of the old one. No mention of subtitle support for MKV files, DTS, DTS-HD, Dolby True HD, HDMI 1.3a, or Netflix, etc. So it does not appear to be up to the standard of the Popcorn Hour A-110 (minus the Netflix). This is very disappointing.

But I ordered one anyway.

Hopefully it still takes under 10 watts to run.

Ordered one. I look at it this way. No increase in price-then if it only did what the previous one did I would be fine with that. It sounds like it does more so I ordered one and I am very happy they came in on time. Great job Sage. And thank you for a Merry Xmas.

Interesting. It's a Sage-capable network media tank. I think this is a very good move product-wise.
One question I have, though, is whether or not the user interface is customizable ala SageMC, etc.

?

What's with that form factor??? At first I thought it was neat - hide behind a lot of on the wall TVs... but then you realize that the IR port is on the front. Maybe that's what the USB on the back is for.

If the IR port were on the back, there would be a problem using the remote with it... but maybe I missed the point on that one.

That reminds me: I didn't see a picture of it, so I should mention the remote is the same.

Dang! I've been waiting for these since August. When I first started this SageTV project, the extenders were in stock, and I took 2-3 days to make a decision on what to do for clients, and by then the extenders were OOS. So, I've been fighting to build a perfect client that "just worked" with HD-PVR and HDHR. I'm only now getting close.

So, I ordered 3 of these this morning hoping to get them soon and call it an early Christmas present for the family.

Just a comment to all those who may be unhappy that feature XYZ wasn't implemented...the price is the same, so if it has the same feature list (it has more) we can't really complain. Something I would have wanted....pass through (bitstream) of TruHD and DTS-MA if the source had an unprotected track and send it out the HDMI port for later decoding. I would have loved this feature, but I also realize this would have increased the price.

Just remember...you can't please ALL the people ALL the time, but you can please SOME of the people SOME of the time.......

Happy Holidays...

I think his point was no plug for a remote IR bud... Really missed the mark on not including that. With one of those I could have hid this behind the tv and just had a ir bud visible.

There are a lot of 3rd party IR repeater or blaster solutions out there. Many universal remotes comes with RF-IR-blaster solutions. So hiding the box is solvable.

And if all of the wishes I've seen here were implemented we would probably had a $299/$399 box. And we would be complaining about the price. For a 'small' company like SageTV I think the keep-the-essential strategy is good.

What I would wish though was a 2 product strategy. A standard version, like HD100 & HD200 are. And a high-end / high-price that has better sigma / scaler / audio format solutions. And maybe more. Then people can choose.

Still looking forward to the HD200. Ordered 1, even though I have a HD100. Will keep that as reserve/backup.

It's just like the HD100, but has a more powerful processor (undisclosed but probably an 8630).
Works in standalone mode (can play from UPnP servers, maybe try Playon for Netflix/Hulu?)
No Netflix/Hulu (yet at least).
Hopefully multichannel PCM over HDMI (no bitstreaming).
Firmware updates are way faster.

That's really "it", Standalone mode and the faster processor are really the big changes from the HD100. If you liked the STX-HD100, you'll love the STP-HD200.

Nope, different firmwares.
