There was zero difference in quality when both clips were played back on my PC (there were slight differences in black levels and color which could be easily adjusted for). But the original clip played back on my Comcast box looked better. Not dramatically, but noticeably. This is why I continue to think its a decoder not a recording quality issue. Maybe Purevideo does it better than the Arcsoft decoders. |

Isn't there an exclusion for making a personal backup?

From wikipedia: Many American legal experts believe that under United States' Federal law, making a backup copy of a DVD-Video or an audio CD by a consumer is legal. Some feel this provision of United States law conflicts with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act prohibition of so-called "circumvention measures" of copy protections. In 2006, the United States Library of Congress created an exemption that explicitly allows circumventing access control for certain educational purposes.[5] In the noted "321" case, Federal District Judge Susan Illston, of the Northern District of California [6], ruled that the backup copies made with software such as DVD Decrypter are in fact legal but that distribution of the software used to make them is illegal. As of the date of this revision, neither the US Supreme Court nor the US Congress has taken definitive action on the matter. |

Not to get too political, since I'm fairly certain a Republican president would've done the same, but... YEP! That's one of the wonderful things the Democrats did to us. Thanks for nothing, Bill!
Ars has a pretty good write-up on the next round of exemption meetings. I loved this particular part: Quote:

I have 2 three minute clips of the Phillies game tonight 600 mb in total (1 OTA mpg & 1 HDPVR ts). I would love to post them but they are too large to post. Anyone have any suggestions?

Not to complain, but the HD PVR sample is 1080i and the source was 720

You are right, I forgot that I have my DirecTV receiver locked in 1080i output. I was originally going to record something from a 1080i channel. Sorry. Would appreciate your opinion of video quality. I have trouble seeing any diference. I'll replace these with one minute recordings of two 720p or two 1080i sets Monday 10/13 if anyone desires.

It's really hard to say. I think the biggest difference I saw was the lower temporal resolution of 1080i
How did you record the OTA broadcast? Can you pipe the output from the device capturing OTA into the HDPVR? That way we'd be seeing the exact same stream from the same original source. I don't think it would be accurate to compare OTA to a Satellite feed. Who knows what Directv does to the signal. Though from what I saw they both looked pretty good. I preferred the OTA one though, there was something hard to describe about the 1080i one, but it may be from the fact that it was 1080i. |

I recorded 2 clips of 2 minutes each. One from QAM HDHR and the other from STB through HD-PVR.
The sources are both 1080i, from the same channel and both are piped by the same Cable Co. (My only question is: Does the STB do any decoding or just pass it through the Component cables?) I am almost done uploading the 1rst clip online and should be done with the 2nd in about an hour...

I am done uploading the 2 sample files. They contain some commercials and a college football highlights and game. I think this gives it a broad enough coparison.

Here are links to 720p files for those of you with 720p monitors.
Both were done with OTA tuners ([1] OTA Haup 2250 [2] OTA LG tuner YPbPr > HD PVR). EDIT: Both are 1 min long - easier to download. links removed dvd maniac in post #36 of this thread posted link to 2 sample 1080i files for those with 1080 monitors.
