Did you look at your disk space usage rules yet?

Sure did. I have it set to use all with no restrictions.

I made sure I had that set up from the beginning as this is strictly my capture drive and I don't need any space reserved.

Have you checked whether your hard drive is partitioned as FAT32 or NTFS? FAT32 has a 4g file size limit.

Converting it to NTFS is painless and you won't lose any data. Takes about 5 minutes on a 20g drive.

Good thought, but no, it's ntfs. I'm actually an IT guy by profession, so I know all IT stuff. But I've easily capped up to 15gigs.

I just don't have an explanation as to why sage would ask the question it did. Part of me wants it to happen again so I can screen cap for you guys exactly what it says, but of course I hope I don't see it again.

I'll probably be ordering a 1tb drive soon and not have to shuffle files around on the drive that I record to anyways..

Hi,
Sorry to budge in, but as I was reading this thread, a thought occurred to me.
Could some other program or functionality be saving this space for itself?
for example, make sure Windows "System restore" is off for that drive.
Also check to see if space is reserved for the "Recycle Bin".
That just might explain what you're experiencing.

Cheers.

All idea are welcome.

I always keep the recycle bin empty, and usually turn off restore for any drive besides C, but I'll check when I get back home. I haven't really installed anything else on this PC as it's really only used for this, so if it was any other program, it would have to be something in windows.

2 Days till my next big recording .

I think that might be your problem. I sugest you try leaving 3-4 gig free. I recall when I first starting using sage in 2003 I encountered a lot of disk space issues like this when I tried using all of the disk space. I read something that caused me to stop using that and leaving some space available. I now have 500 gig disks and tell sage to use only 380 gig. I can then increase the limit if I need too.

Do note that Recycle bin automatically reserves space for potentially deleted items, even if it's empty.
I'm not sure how much space is defined in your system, nor am I sure if that amount is already subtracted from the available space.
Worst case scenario, you gain a few extra gigs by disabling the recycle bin.
Assuming, of course, that you don't need it on that Hard drive. (Recycle Bin reserved space is per logical drive and not the total for all of them.)

Ok, so it's officially not a space issue.
It didn't do the same thing I opened this post with, but it still glitched.

This time it recorded for about 1.5 hours, it was almost halftime, and I had sagetv open with the video playing as it was recording on the server, and with 50 seconds left in the half it's video froze. So I went to main menu and told it to go to standby, then I restored it back and told it to watch live tv and it started working again.

Because of this, the recording momentarily stopped during this glitch, and started a new mpg file when it continued recording. After it was all done, i reviews both mpgs, and I'm missing another minute or so of video between these 2 files when Sagetv decided to freak.

I've seen it randomly do this before, although not when I was recording a game. It's very annoying.

I'm thinking it must be something to do with it being Vista 64bit. I will get a big drive and put it into my XP 32bit system soon and I'll see if any of these glitches occur.

I had turned on that logging feature that someone put a link to earlier in this post, but I can find neither of the log files as described in that post. <shrug>

Have you tried submitting a request to tech support? I have no suggestions because I have had no problems with 4+ hour movies and other very long recordings.

And, as was suggested by others above, why don't you do your testing on long manual recordings during the week so you can test on throw-away recordings. I'm not sure why you waited for the weekend to try it on something you really wanted to watch. Maybe you have a playback problem that causes other issues -- try it while watching the recording live & not watching it while it records.

And, the FAQ about debug logging talks about where the logs are. For Vista, check the VirtualStore if it isn't in the install dir.

I was already planning on that. I do believe it's something with playback too.
I think if I leave it in standby mode, I have a feeling it won't glitch.

I recorded 6 hours of the Ryder Cup golf yesterday without trouble in HD. I think the file was about 45 GB and I didn't have problems.

I recorded the 1p game with 45 minutes of padding on the end. I had some strange buffering issues, but it recorded as expected.

My dad records 3+ hours of football and baseball (normally 4 at a time) all weekend lond, but he uses XP. My guess is it's Vista 64bit. No one recommends 64bit for a recording system.

Well I recorded the HD 2 hour premiere of Survivor last night with it in stand=by mode not watching it and after it was finished, it looked perfect.

I'm starting to think maybe it's something to do with the fact that I am using onboard video, and while I am watching the video at the same time, it might freak out occasionally and causes sagetv to have issues.

I think I'll record the debate tonight for 2 hours in HD, and then I have a show later that night too...All in standby mode and I bet I'll have no issues. So although I like to have it on when I record the football games, it's not too big of a deal. It's more important I get the complete recordings.

The reason I suspect it might be something with the fact that I use onboard video, is that at anytime I start live tv, the lower 3 inches of the screen has this flickering that eventually goes away if I leave it along, but if I move the window, resize it, anything, the flickering comes back and I think that's because of a video card weakness.

Anyway, just more thoughts I'm having . If I have any issues while in stand-by, all recordings will then be on my XP machine period .

I recorded 8 hours (10 am - 6 pm) of olympics at a time over the summer in HD and I never had an issue. I like your idea that it may be a hardware issue of some sort, or the 64 bit version of windows. What capture card are you using. I use an HD Homerun and It has been very reliable.

I'm using the HDhomerun as well. I believe I've narrowed it down to possibly using onboard video to watch the video while it records. Heck, it will screw up some even if I'm not recording and watching live tv on that pc.

If I keep it minimized as a service, it works fine. So that's what I'm doing now and have had zero problems. I'm thinking it's because I am using onboard video.

If I get a good video card for it, I can do more testing, but I'm not too worried about it now. My xp pro 32bit machine has no issue with my gaming video card in it with watching/recording, and I just upgraded to a 1 terabyte drive. So I'll probably start using it for recording everything whether I watch it or not.

I remember when I tried to record the opening ceremony for the Olympics SageTV cut my video as well. It only recorded 3 hours, so the ending was cut. Same thing happened to my brother's recording. He also uses SageTV on his PC. Both of our computers had more then 100GB of free space. Since I only record one hour shows this doesn't bother me, but in my opinion it's SageTV issue.

Seeing that only 3 people have reported this issue with a multitude of people recording over 3 hours and as much as 8 hours in a single recording I find it hard to understand it being a SageTV issue. If you look hard enough you'll find an incorrect setting, recycle bin taking up more disk space than you realize (should be disabled on the recording drives), wrong disk settings (gb instead of mb)for free space and action to take, etc. There are too many football games being recorded for this to go unnoticed. Get rid of your .properties file and backup completely and reconfigure Sage from scratch in case you manaully modded a setting and don't remember it.

Actually, if I remember correctly, the Opening Ceremony was slotted for a 3 hour time frame but went over (at least according to Zap2it). My wife watched it live and it was fine, but I tried to watch it the next day lost the very ending. This is very common with sporting events.
