Doesn't Hauppauge have a recorder that includes Component Inputs and 5.1 SPDIF inputs which then would A) allow you to plug into the U-Verse STB HD side? B) Then allow you to worst case to manually playback HD on the STB and Record with SageTV and C) Hence capture a 1080i recording on Sage?

I to want to get a way from the cable price gouging, and move to an IP centric broadband world. If people think Comcast and TimeWarner are bad, get stuck working with SuddenLink - talk about the gotcha's!!

Yep, that is how my rig is set up. I have two UVerse STBs each connected to a separate Hauppauge HD-PVR. I have mine configured to record @ 1080i.

You don't use the UVerse STBs recording or playback capabilities directly to record content or to playback recorded content, you only use them to tune into the desired channel HD or SD and then the HD-PVR captures the 1080i content from the analog component output of the STB. The content is stored on the hard drive in you SageTV server and then you use either a SageTV client computer or (preferred) a SageTV extender for playback. My two UVerse STB's, two HD-PVRs, and SageTV server are all located in a central location in my house. I ma using the extenders and they are the only distributed hardware, one at each TV location.

Shadeblue,

Did you get any resistance from the Uverse installer when you asked them to install the STBs in your rack? When I tried that with Dish last year, they said they had to install them at each tv, and I had to move them after they left.

Hi Chris,

When the original installer set it up, I did have him install the STBs at each TV, I then moved them to the rack myself shortly thereafter. I did not want to raise any questions up front. Later during customer support visits for UVerse issues, the STBs were in the rack and the installer/support guys did not seem to care. When I talk to the techs and they realize that I and not the average consumer and probably know more than them in the field of technology, networking, and computers, they typically they are very cooperative

As far as installers and field support guys, so far my experience has been good with UVerse. The guys generally know their stuff and quickly resolve any issues. As for the phone support, that's another story. Don't bother with the first tier offshore support reps, escalate to tier two to get any real help that you may need.

Cheers!
SB
