It's only the HD Locals off the sat that cause problems, every other HD station is fine. Unfortunately I'm in an area that's pretty darn rough for OTA reception, so that's not really a viable option.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the HD100 still can't play back captions that are embedded in the digital recording, or those from an analog Hauppauge card.

There are ways around this.

HD Extender Limitations, if any?

Hello all. I was wondering if I could trouble some of you who have intimate knowledge of the HD Extender about what its limitations are? I am debating whether or not to get one when they come back in stock (hopefully soon, but who knows.)

So, what are the extent of the limitations of the device, when compared to a Sage Client Computer? I know some of them, but might be missing some.

Thanks for anyone's responses in advance...

This came up a while ago. http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32161 (merged above)

From that thread, most of it's limitations are the obvious things: can't play DVDs, can't surf the web, etc.

I don't actually have one (yet), I just remember that thread...

Has no drive to play DVDs directly from the disc, it plays DVD rips just fine

Opps, not being clear enough!

I figured the "directy from disc" part fell under the category of "obvious", but forgot about rips

Can the HD extender play back (and how would it) rips of BluRay Discs? Meaing, I don't want to convert it to an mkv.

i.e. - can it playback m2ts files? how about the audio decoding? some movies like Spiderman3 only have TruHD and LCPM. Can it handle that?

Thanks.

Here's a thread on that topic. The answer appears to be yes with some minor limitations.

Figured I'd state the obvious because there could be confusion because MCE Extenders don't play rips, and the native support for DVD rips is something that makes Sage and the Extenders stand out IMO.

No it can't play a "Blu-ray Disc", no menus or anything, but...

It can play m2ts, it will pass DTS or DD, not sure what happens with multichannel PCM, but anything else you'll have to transcode.

Thanks for the info stanger89.

I am planning my new house media system and I'm anxiously awaiting the Hauppage HD-DVR box with component inputs to be released and supported by SageTV. Then, I'd like to get 2 extender boxes and live the good life.

I used Sage back in the day, but for some reason, it wouldn't run problem free on my system, so I went to the dark side of MCE. Now I'm still running VMC now, but it doesn't fulfill my needs with this HD (or lack of) crapola. I could get a cable card system, but that doesn't make it perfect either.....oh well

Anyhow, Here's to that Hauppage device that will hopefully kick ass. Lord knows I've been waiting for a good HD card for a while now (I bought the original Fusion 3 card and it's been collecting dust for a while (no OTA for me).
