WinTV HD PVR and Sage.. How??

Forgive my ignorance here.. as a user of Time Warner's "Broadcast Basic" package and a handful of QAM channels via a HDHomerun..

What is this device and how will it fit into your media centers??

I assume this device will allow you to record shows from your Satellite or FIOS providers??

If so, am I correct in the following..

Satellite packages provide only 1 tuner?
The HD PVR will record from only 1 tuner?

So, if you hook this device into your Satellite feed, you will be removing the connection from it to your TV and using the HD Extenders for that connection?

Thanks!

Basically yes.

Add in this will work for cable systems too to get all the encrypted QAM channels that you can not get with an hdhomerun.

My real issue with this device is how it will hurt the guys at Silicondust, they created a great product with better support. However they will have some issue competing with the HD-PVR. Course they may have their own product under development.

I am not sure I agree with that. There is still a value for HDhomerun. I just purchased one for OTA so I can record network stations from that. That leaves the HD PVR free to record non-network HD channels.

That's exactly my plan. I am moving the HDHomerun from being used as ClearQAM tuner to OTA and then picking up an HD-PVR (I'm also making the switch to Dish).

That is true, however it will still reduce some sales. If the HD-PVR was out when I was shopping for an HD capture solution my first set of money would go to the HD-PVR before an hdhomerun. However now that I will have both because I already have the hdhomerun and it will be used for more tuners on the locals.

Keep in mind the HDHomerun captures the already encoded MPEG2 data stream without having to convert digital, to analog, to digital again. For unencrypted content, which is the majority of primetime television and what I happen to watch, it will actually be of better quality than the HD-PVR, cause it can't get any better than what is being sent to you.

To me, having the HDHomerun has been wonderful, and I can't justify the cost of 2 HD-PVRs and 2 rented settop boxes right now, when I can get 75% or more of what I need to record from the dual HDHomerun tuners.

Then again, now that the shows are mostly over, I will still need a way to record Battlestar...

The HDHomerun also doesn't require that you rent an STB from your cable company.

Would macrovision effect this unit? My pay TV subscriber (Foxtel in Australia) is using macrovision which is effecting peoples DVD recorders, although they said they where going to fix it. Does macrovision effect the component output with SD or HD?

The issue with renting boxes is solved if you simply buy them. I have 4 cable box's, none of which I paid more than $50 for, and none of which require a monthly fee other than the basic cable fee.

Most cable companies in the US will refuse to connect a user owned box because the most common type for sale is a stolen box. After spending three hours talking with many CSR's and their supervisors at my local cable company I just gave up. I plan to switch to Satelite some time in the future.

That sucks. I can guarantee my boxes are not stolen as I got them from friends or from the company itself through promotions.

Anyways I'm order # 33723 and my card was just hit for the full amount. Looks like its shipping today

I know they are suppose to "by law" let you buy and activate a user owned cable stb. After 4 CSR's and 2 supervisors my cable company wore me down as well and I just give up. I think Comcast standing orders is to stonewall you until you start talking lawyer. But it was not that important to me so I dropped it

Oh I agree, just saying if you did NOT have an HDHomerun and had the choice between being able to record ALL the HD channels you receive or just the locals. Which would you choose? I know I would first get the HD-PVR. However since I already own an HDHR I will certainly keep it and just add a single HD-PVR because I too can not justify 2 HD-PVRs.

My pre-order was for three HD-PVR's but my CC just got charged for only a single unit. I wonder if they decided to limit pre-orders to a single unit but failed to tell anyone about this policy change.

Has anybody here had there CC charged for more than one?

I'm just guessing here, but I would bet they are limiting shipment of the first batch to one per person and you would get your second and third units in the shipment due out next week. Sounds like 500 units go out today and another 500 next week.

I'd e-mail them to be sure though. Its sort of a gamble to get more than one unit now anyway since nobody seems to be able to confirm when SageTV or BeyondTV or Hauppauge's software will support multiple HD-PVRs on one PC.

I'm order 33862 and my CC hasn't been charged yet. I wonder what the cut off is? I thought I would make the initial shipment, but maybe not

Early adoption is a gamble in itself. Might as well bet large

Besides, if no-one is getting more than one there will be no one to help test the multi-encoder support.

I'm 349** and while I got an email last week saying my order would ship by the end of this week (but no moneys been taken yet) I get the feeling I won't even be in the next shipment.

Oh and did any one see my question about macrovision?
