I've run chkdsk and found no problems. I also can't find any HDD errors. Just in case I'm looking in the wrong place. It's under event viewer system, right?
Running memtest again even on the std memory space setting gave errors. Since I don't have a spare PSU lying arround, I think I can probably find some spare memory and check that first. I'll follow the original suggestiong, strip it down and run memtest, then swap the memory and run it again. If it fails no matter what I guess it's time to find a PSU somewhere. This will take some time, I'll post back in hoepfully less than a week.

According to Occum's Razor-All other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best.
You probably should have tested with another power supply. Gerry

update: I may have found the problem
I'd run a bunch of tests on the memory and I think I'm getting false errors, I think the memory is fine. I was going to swap out the PSU when I noticed that the power connector wasn't seated properly. I couldn't tell until I'd gone as far as taking out the graphics card because the connector is between the big assed heat sink on the CPU and the big assed heat sink on the graphics card. I don't know how it could've happened but I guess I managed to disturb it at some point and it's been slowly getting looser over time.
I haven't bothered with any more testing or swapping stuff, I've just rebuilt it and turned it back on. If it's working fine in a couple of weeks I'll take that as it's fixed. if not then I'll actually go through with swapping the PSU. It's always something stupid isn't it?

Just an FYI
I built a sage system back in July. I bought 3 500g sata drives for recordings and thought I'd reuse my ide drive for the OS. I had BSDs almost every day, and it'd try to reboot, but would hang because it couldn't find the OS. A poweroff/poweron fixed it. The issue was the IDE OS drive didn't play nice with the sata drives. I bought a new smaller sata drive for the OS and it's been stable for the past 6 months. (this was built using an intel board and an e6600 proc) |

Thanks ybrew, that's a useful thing to know. if I continue to have issues I'll check that out as a possibility although I don't think that it's the problem here since the system was running stably for about 6 months or so before this happened.
