I took the extender apart again so I could see how the IR sensor lines up with the stock hole under the "clear" plastic. Attached is a photo.

Folks - expanding the hole underneath the smokey cover does the trick. The receiver isn't centered in the hole, and my HD1000 sits low in the tv cabinet. Making the top part of the plastic hole larger solved my issues with the thing. I did go ahead and remove the little metal crossbars from the top of the receiver as well. May not have needed to, but since I had it apart..... The more I use the HD1000 now, the more I love it!

I tried to only expand the hole under the smokey plastic cover. This improved the IR reception, but it still left a lot to be desired. Then, I drilled completely through all of the plastic cover. Now the IR reception is excellent. I can even point the remote 180 degrees in the opposite direction. Such a shame that we had to stoop to this modification. Sage should have caught this problem.

Um, you did see this announcement, right? Basically Sage has acknowledged the bug and are working to provide a solution (which I assume will have no drilling requirements).

Oh man, no I did not see that announcement. Hopefully I didn't just prevent myself from getting the fix.

Hey folks - just to mention... If you prefer them, you can order the Hauppauge 45-Button remotes directly from Hauppauge for 10 bucks a piece. The MVP remote work just as well with the HD100, and I personally like it better then the one supplied with the HD100. Since the HD100 ended up being an addition to, rather then a replacement of a MVP, I just ordered a few extra remotes from Hauppauge.
