These appliance type NAS devices are not designed with performance in mind. They typically do not expose file system parameters to the user for examination or modification. Performance varies widely among these guys. Some are pathetically slow, others decently fast.

I think if you can get a large file transferred from the NAS to your PC at say 2X-3X the playback rate you're probably fine from the NAS performance side of the house and should look elsewhere for problems. typically Dvix files are more compressed than MPEG2 files and thereby need less transfer performance.

Thanks,
Mike

^^

Thanks for the input. I am getting decent enough speed, can transfer an 800mb divx file in 3 -4 minutes, so that shouldn't be the issue. Plus, as I said, MPG files play fine, it's the DivX that are stuttering.

Did you have a question somewhere that didn't get answered? It looks like they've all been responded to.

Sorry Craig, I thought as it had been 2 months and the issues appeared resolved it wasn't a hijack. You're using a NAS...any suggestions?

I actually haven't built my NAS yet and if I have questions when I reach that point then I will continue my thread here. I just thought it was proper etiquette to start your own thread. All other forums that I participate in frown upon hijacking threads and don't allow it. I don't mean to make such a big deal about it, I just got annoyed that I can't just keep one thread on my subject down the road. Sorry, I'll just start another when I get there.
