I've put a link to mpg2srt on the first post, but I'd still like to see a converted .smi file that's not working. It may be easy to fix the parser so that people can have an option of what tool they use to create .smi files.

You can also use SRT2SMI to convert an existing .srt file

If someone needs to convert a file into a .smi, then the original file probably didn't come from a Sage recording. If you have a DVD rip and need a matching .smi file for it, mpg2srt won't work to convert a DL'ed .srt, .sub, or other subtitle file. You'd need a subtitle converter.

edit:
I attached a zip of a .srt file that I converted to .smi and get "invalid captioning file" using srt2smi.
Attached Files
File Type: zip bloodsport.zip (31.6 KB, 536 views)

For me I'm using the PVR250 which captures the CC into the file. But, I watch TV via a mediaMVP. So, mpg2srt is a must.

Subtitle workshop I think had extra spaces or tabs at the start of the lines.

I haven't any problems with srt2smi since version 1.03 of this plugin.
For anything else, I use SUBresync and that comes with Vobsub. It works on .sub, .srt, etc.

Ke6guj, can you check that the .smi file has the same name as your movie file.

I just renamed bloodsport.smi to match one of my .mpgs and it played the subtitles correctly.

yah, it has the same name as the movie file, if not, then I don't get the closed captioning option in the options pop-up.

Ooops, just found this... "Fixed parsing of converted .srt file (thanks UGH )" . Installed the latest .stvi and it works on my converted .srt and .sub files.

Ok, played around with some converting and did run into some more issues.

I converted an .srt to .smi in subtitle workshop and got the invalid closed captioning file error.

It looks like subtitle workshop does some diffent .smi formatting.

I am not using .srt from the recordings but I am trying to use CC as subtitles for movies using .srt I d/l.

So you're saying .srt converted by srt2smi will work?

Can you try this version to make sure I haven't broken anything and see if it fixes the subtitle workshop converted files.

I tried it out and it works sorta ok. My previously converted files still play fine, but subtitle workshop converted files display a little funny. There is always a empty caption box on the screen, its sometimes a square box, 1 character wide, and sometimes a rectangle, 1/2 height tall and 1 character wide. Sometimes I can actually see it under the correctly displayed captions.

As added functionality, would it be possible to show the CC icon in the imported folder views instead of just in the detailed show info, like it does in the the Recording view.

edit: One other thing I noticed, in 1.03 and 1.04, maybe earlier, is that the first caption shows on the screen from the very beginning and stays until said, then the captions run normally.

1.04 works well with .smi from SW. I do get the rectangle. Don’t mind it so much.
However… I don’t know if this has to do with this stvi: I use subtitles which are not in English and the caption shows gibrish instead of letters. Is there a way to define an ANSI cations or a Unicode font?

That's that strangest definition of "works well" I've seen.

I don't know what I can do about that, this import is just a port of what was in Malore's STV. I'll have a look at this and the issues ke6guj has raised.

In my limited testing it looks good.

the added marker icons will let me quickly scan a list and see what shows I need to search for to dl any available caption files.
