add my 2 pence worth
Sorry for joining in this late, but was playing with a friends wireless MVP last night.
She had a D-Link DSL-G604T router and the wireless MVP would connect and work OK. She's been having problems with the wireless side stopping for some time, so I dropped off a Netgear DG834GT. We configured it exactly the same. All other clients worked straight away, indeed some of her problems running placeshifter on the local lan went away, and she was very happy. Happy that is, until we tried the Wireless MVP's. As you can expect, they wouldn't obtain an initial IP address. Go back to the D-Link router and they work fine. I've tried disabling the DCHP on the netgear router and using a software based DHCP server, still nothing. Also tried using the D-Link as the ASDL router with the wireless off, and using the netgear purely for wireless, but still no luck The netear works as a switch, not just a dumb hub, I was wondering if this had anything to do with it not working... Has anyone had the wireless MVP working with a netgear DG834G or DG834GT router? I'd like to know before I buy a wireless MVP myself as I have one at home. |

From my tests the MVP does not comply with the DHCP standard which means it may or may not work with other standards compliant devices. This makes it impossible to know if particular equipment will work with the MVP in your network, with your server etc. even if others have them working in their particular configuration. In my setup, my MVPs can boot but have a margin of less that one second when obtaining their IP address. Booting does not mean my MVPs are working reliably. If something changes in my network due to things outside my direct control such as network load, server delays, increased transmission errors etc. my MVPs will not boot. If I change something by buying new equipment, upgrading the firmware of the network devices I already have and this causes increased delays my MVPs will not boot. Lets hope the situation is improved in the upcoming beta. |
