Tried that... re-ran the setup file. the path shows up in the list of scanned directories. the logs even show the files in the UNC path as "processing" (3-4 entries per file by now), but no comskip files are showing up after more than 2hrs. usually takes <20min to process a 1hr show. would it be comskip itself or the java monitor that's causing the problem?

I may fire up dirmon2 and see if it can handle UNC or mapped paths. I'm not crazy about that though since it still hangs up on files that are being recorded.

Yes Dirmon2 can handle UNC paths. I had that before I recently tried ComSkip monitor. Both have worked just fine for me as far as I can tell. I know this because Comskip monitor cleaned up some old edl files I had from when I had dirmon2/showanalyzer installed. Not sure what the problem is - sorry.

Left Dirmon2 running for 4-5hrs today. looks like it's processing the same 2 files over and over again like it can't see the edl.

Edit: my bad.. still had it looking for .txt as well as .edl. working ok now, i think.

Lightbulb eureka?

ok... I think I know what's wrong w/ CSM. I checked in Task Manager and both java and wrapper are running under the "system" account. using linux and samba shares I need it to run as a user account. any quick way to make that happen?

I just decided to get some commercial skipping going on... so I downloaded the file attached to the first post here and installed it. Installation went OK, but I didn't see any files popping up in my sage recordings folder... I went looking for a log and found a wrapper.log file in the comskipmonitor\data folder. Opened it up and saw a bunch of ERROR> X frames in 1 second messages... that didn't worry me too terribly bad, but at the bottom I got an error about not being able to find a file (what file it was looking for is not specified) and it stops there.

Am I being impatient? Should I wait 10 minutes for it to kick off? Or is this a known problem?

Go into the service control manager and change the account the CSM service runs under.

Right-click My Computer, select Manage
Drill down to Services and Applications -> Services

thanks

Just wanted to post a message and say thanks for making this. It really eased my installation to get commercial skipping working...and it's about 90% reliable with no tweaking involved.

I can't tell you how cool it is to sit there and DO NOTHING when a commercial is about to come on. I am having to retrain myself in order to keep from grabbing the remote every time!

Is there a better place to post than in this thread to get some help with Comskip Monitor? It's just flat out not working for me, and there isn't enough detail in the logs to give me an idea of even where to look.

Try the comskip forum.

http://www.kaashoek.com/comskip

Comskip Monitor is a package that makes running comskip.exe easy. The comskip.exe software discussion is at the link above.

The problem is, I believe, with Comskip Monitor and not comskip.exe. Comskip Monitor does not appear to be starting comskip.exe.

And did you run the setup program for Comskip monitor and your files are NOT on another server? If so and you filled in everything correctly in the wizard and clicked finish it should work. If the files are on another server do you setup a user with a password to run the service? And in the config file you have to put in UNC paths \\\\servername\\share\\folder.

I ran the setup (I liked the use of an embedded webserver to do the configuration, pretty neat). My files are not on another server, they are on another disk local to the Sage server it is running on. Looking at the log file reveals a bunch of lines claiming an error about too many frames in 1 second (reporting hundreds of frames in 1 second). I think these are from the first time it tried to run comskip.exe, but am mythified by the errors since they're presumably on Sage recordings that have not been touched in any way by me. After that, there is an error that a file cannot be found and that's it.

Well, at the risk of being both redundant and wrong, I don't think Comskip Monitor writes a log file. If the log file you are referring to is in your recorded shows directory, it is a log file written by comskip.exe, not the monitor. If that's the case, the errors are caused by comskip.exe, and it could be because you've got problems with the comskip.ini configuration. Make sure that your .ini file, the .exe file, and all other references are to the comskip subfolder in the Comskip Monitor folder. If you are referencing files and folders in other locations, you are liable to get errors.

erik,

I searched high and low for these answers without luck...

can comskip process more than one file at a time? and how do I set it up to do so?
should comskip "process" livetv com' skipping while it is analyzing other files? and how to set this up?

I've read several places about how to set comskip up but these two questions still linger...

thanks

Comskip can not process multiple files at the same time but you can execute one comskip.exe for each file that should be processed at the same time.
So you start as many comskip.exe with the right parameters as needed.

How you start livetv processing I don't know because I don't know Sage. But I assume there is somewhere in sage an option to start something as soon as the recording or timeshifting starts where one of the possible parameters is the name of the file that should be processed, again, you can do this at the same time as having other comskips processing other files.

Of course, when you CPU is to slow to run many comskips at the same time the live_tv processing will run too slow and you will not be able to skip somthing.

Basically whatever program you're using to launch comskip will handle this for you. So the actual steps to get it going would depend if you're using comskip monitor or dirmon2. Nothing special has to be set in comskip itself.

This will also be handled by the program you're using to launch comskip. Dirmon2 just scans the directory and treats recordings in progress the same as it does finished recordings. The second part is comskip will need to output the results as they're found. This used to be off by default, but I'm not sure about now.

I'm using comskip monitor, comskip, and comskip playback for the default stv (latest versions on all three)

I'm just confused because I tried to get livetv to be processed by comskip, but it doesn't work. Comskip is only processing the past "recorded" shows., one by one. I would think my computer is powerful enough to process multiple files at the same time... currently a one hour show takes about three minutes to be "comskip'd"

Heck I'm stiil trying to figure out what the best settings for all three are too.

As mentioned before I believe this is something you have to set in comskip monitor. Whatever program you're using to launch comskip will need to be configured to launch multiple instances of comskip. I use Dirmon2 so I'm no help, but maybe those that use it can help you out.

As far as I can tell Compskip Monitor doesn't have an option to start multiple instances of Compskip.
